Pressure plate and clutch disc or just disc?

When you upgrade a clutch, do you have to get a new pressure plate with it or can you just get the disc? I tried to search it, but I am bad at doing that. Thanks for the help.

Matt,

You want to get the complete clutch kit with pressure plate and disc. Both are designed to work with one another. FYI, we ahve the ACT and Exedy on special right now and it might be just what you are looking for.

Thanks,
Tom

it's a good idea to do both the pressure plate and disc. Especially if you want an "upgraded" unit.

Don't forget the flywheel will need to be resurfaced at a minimum also.

Its just that the whole kit is so much money. Im looking into this because of all the stories I hear about the clutches slipping at low mileage. I will be getting an Evo soon, very soon (got the loan, just need to find one(Im in FL if anyone is selling )) and it will be used, probley an 03. So its going to have around the mileage that most people say the clutch starts going at.

My thinking is that just replacing it wouldn't get you as far as an upgrade. Especially if there are basic performance upgrades. And I guess saying "all the stories" makes it sound like it happens to everyone, isnt the way to put it, but I have heard it enough to make me think about it.

Buy a used EVO with an upgraded clutch. If you have waited a while to buy one just wait till the right one comes along

the labor cost will equal the cost of a clutch/disc and flywheel. If you just do the disc, you won't necesarily come out money ahead in the long run, because you'll be pulling the tranny out again soon. If your goal is something less than 500 ft. lbs. of tq. and less than 500 whp, you can get an ACT pressure plate and disc, resurface the stock flywheel for pretty cheap. I won't quote, but I'm sure some vendor will!

I've got 42k miles on an 03 with stock clutch, holding 300 ft. lbs. of torque. Don't believe all the stories about clutches wearing out fast, it's usually driver error.

That makes me feel better, but with a used car, who knows who drove it and how before you. And I could put it in myself so Im not worried about the labor.

Thanks for all the replys, all very helpful.
