I suppose because many argue you shouldn't remove headstuds unless you're replacing the headgasket. I am guessing the original poster wants to know if the one at a time replacement method of headstuds is safe

when you replace the studs your going to want to replace the gasket. if your not touching the studs, dont worry about it. atleast thats the logic that comes from wrenchign on other vehicles

1st time - installed camshafts and arp headstuds using the 1 at a time method

2nd time - installed camshafts and arp headstuds while the head was off of the block, replaced the HG w/ a stock HG.

Never had any issues or problems with the way it was done the 1st time.

Nope didnt replace the gasket when doing Cams, Valvesprings/Retainers. I probably would if I messed with the head though.

One head stud at a time, torque to correct value (can't recall at the moment what the value is) and it should be fine. Make sure there is no pressure in the cooling system, simply take off the radiator cap. I did it like that, beacuse AMS does it the same way. If they do it, I had no fear.

I think some people confuse the Valve Cover Gasket with the Head Gasket.

If the 1@a time stud method works, and I believe you can trust it (Especially if it's true that AMS uses it) , it would be pointless to replace it unless it's leaking, seeing as you aren't removing the Head.

The valve Cover gasket would only need to be replaced if it was old or damaged. In most situations, I can't imagine an VIII's gasket to be either

^ I agree, I think people are confusing the 2. If you dont mess with the head why replace th gasket. Maybe this is some newbie info but what the hell...When you replace the cams, all your pulling off is the Valve Cover, you are not pulling the head off. Personally I would be more worried about valvesprings and retainers when replacing cams than I would be about the HG...just my .02 cents.
