Need advice

My car is totally stock and I have an Apexi Super AFC (not the II, the one before it) and I was thinking of installing it. But I thought about it and I realized that I should reflash my computer isntead because that also removes my rev limiter, boost cut, boost taper, and top speed limiter.

Do you guys think I should do that or I should install the SAFC for easier future tuning when I install more mods?

If you are going to do a mail in flash then i would still do the afc for more "fine tuning". Personally i would just do the afc, use the extra money towards a wideband or some other performance part and go from there. Is the money for a flash really worth removing your rev limiter and top speed limiter? Those things are there to help protect your engine. So if you are not familiar with what can happen if you were to over rev the engine etc, just leave the ecu as is and do some simple piggy back systems. Good luck.

I've been through this, so I can add a little more insight. I had an S-AFC I left over from my DSM days, so that was the first mod I installed on my Evo about 6 months after purchasing it. The first problem is that you have to get a patch harness, which will run you $100 unless you plan on splicing into the factory ECU wires (not a good idea). Next, you really need a wideband O2 in order to properly track and tune your AFRs. You _can_ use the stock narrowband O2 voltages to tune, but it is not recommended. I did it and ran 12.8@106.3 on 93oct with NOTHING but the SAFC and a 1.76 60'. However, I did have the other necessary tool, which is a pocketlogger, so that you can track timing, which is the most important factor. The pocketlogger is always what logs narrowband O2s, so this is all I used, but I really needed a wideband O2 to be more safe and to provide a more accurate tune.

After a while, even though my track times were very good, I noticed that I was always 25-30wtq short on the dyno as compared to flashed Evos (or even Evos with standalone or more advanced piggybacks). I also was running out of gear in 4th at the drag strip (6spd hits 110-111 in 4th at 7600), so I needed to fix that. I then decided to get a base flash to 1) provide the mid-range torque that is lost using an S-AFC without upgraded injectors, and 2) to raise my rev limiter so that I could pull 4th all the way through the traps. To my slight surprise, the results were better than expected. Though my peak WHP may not have risen, my low-end/mid-range was dramatically improved, because I no longer lost all my timing at peak torque (3600-3800rpm) due to the factory lean condition in this area. Driving on a daily basis immediately increased in enjoyment ,and I no longer needed to downshift in order to go fast. I am now able to just stay in the higher gear and accelerate from low rpm effortlessly. The raised rev limiter also allowed me to go from 111mph to nearly 114mph without hitting the rev limiter in 4th.

However, I still use the S-AFC in addition to my Dynoflash so that I can fine-tune, if necessary, but mainly for tuning on race gas at the track. I toss in race gas, turn up the boost, then retune with the SAFC by removing fuel (can go leaner with race gas). I think it's a great idea to use the S-AFC on TOP of a Dynoflash, but the S-AFC by itself is not the best route...
