Went past redline...

My friend was driving along side me and he wanted to see what the Evo could do... so right after a stop, I took off. I guess I pushed the gas harder than I thought and then all of a sudden I heard the engine go past redline. I looked down and I think it was around 8000RPM or maybe less. Afterwards I smelt a burning smell for a few minutes... Is there something wrong with the engine? I'm just really worried about it...

you should be fine, redline starts at 7 but you have to 7.5 before the rev limiter kicks in

if your car is stock im sure it wasn't around 8k with the rev limiter, anything before 8k is fine on the stock block

No, man. Your engine is fine. In rally events they take the car well beyond 7,000 rpms just fine. Infact, most ECU flashes raise the rev limiter. I've taken mine to about 7.400 several times. It's all right. The smell could be a number of things, if you just got the car, it could be undercoating, it may even be your clutch, you never know. As long as everything is running fine, you're good to go. But if you plan to rev that high a lot plan on getting oil changes more frequently.

The tach on the EVO is not very accurate passed 7k. I can take my car up to 8k but it would really only be around 7.5. You don't have to worry about going passed the redline. The rev limiter on the EVO won't let you cause any damage, unless you have had it raised or removed.

Thanks for your quick responses guys. My car only has an intake, cat-back, and racing clutch. So then it was the rev limiter... Phew, I was just worried about the smell afterwards.

You can take these cars passed 7k all day. You will find countless people on this board who take their car passed 7k daily. Only time I have seen people damage their engine is when they miss a shift.

if you hit the rev limiter it was probally just unburnt fuel.

The stock rev limiter is at 7600 rpm. I have seen as high as 7680 rpm in my logs before.
