2.3 Buschur comming

Well after looking at the valve train for a knocking 3 times, putting stock cams and lifters in. Checking roller rockers twice and actually starting the car without the valve cover on. I dropped the pan to check rod bearings (no problem there). So I went and pulled the head last Saturday. Quite the job for the first time with an Evo. Took me almost 8 hrs to pull the head and take the rods and pistons out. Well I found bad scratches on the load side of the piston skirts and slight ones in the sleeves. I mic'ed the pistons and they are in correct tolerance. Rings are fine. Crank is fine. Still haven't found the source of the noise. I will have to pull all the springs and valves out of the head next. When I do this I will send the head out for a competition valve job, clean up the casting flaws, polish the exhaust port, unschroud the valves, and take very little material off the guides.

Funny thing is I have NO signs of detonation on the pistons, spark plugs, rod bearings, or the head. Maybe I had high EGT's or something to cause the piston skirt wear. Though I think this would leave the pistons distorted. I changed the oil and filter every 2k with OEM filter and oil. The only other thing I can think of is maybe before I got my car (had 196 miles on it), they beat it while it was cold or did some kind of bad abuse. I only have 7500 miles on it now.

All this leads to ordering a new 2.3 stroker and clutch. Hopefully this motor will last longer than 7500 miles cause this gets expensive :/

Also today I spent 3 hrs taking off all the accessories, drive shafts, cables, and everything else except for the last 2 motor mounts and the tranny/transfer case's hydrolic lines. I am sure I still have another hour or two left to get the block out.

Sorry for the long post. I will update as this progresses with my daily driver !! ouch

trying to locate the evo's engine knock is like a quest for the holy grail

be interesting to hear if the stroker removes the knock

I have a bad feeling it is not going too. After I check the head and if I find nothing, I will put it back to gether and let it eat...
