Think of it this way, If somebody Kick you Dead square in the Junk would you like it, or think its "OK" to do?

The thud is normal. If your worried about damaging something then slow your shifts down. The rear difs are pretty strong and I wouldnt worry much about it.
I have found that this only seems to happen on '05+ cars. From what I can tell, Mitsu didn't change anything in the rear of the car that would cause this on the newer models. Anyone with an '03-04 get this thump?
I have never heard a banging noise like that, other than if I just drop the clutch out, and that noise comes from the tranny, not the rear diff... That dosent really sound very good for the car. I have never had a noise come from the rear diff. Not to mention our cars dont have a LSD in the rear diff from what I have heard, but I could be completly off. Good luck with finding your problem.
