Or yeah just be safe and take it to a professional so they can give you a proper diagnosis.
Injectors also tick as well, so it could be. I use to have this problem on my honda before.

The loss of power makes me think its not ticking lifters. You don't have a boost gauge do you?

either way, its time for that car to visit the dealer.

I heard a slight ticking sound with my 2005 and after further investigation it turned out to be part of the front windshield plastic surround. Apparently it was "tapping" on the window in certain situations. If I would accelerate, the additional wind speed caused the sound.. which freaked me out. I thought it was something far more serious. There is a TSB for this from Mitsubishi- see https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...TSB+windshield

I've also noticed that when the car is cold.. it seems to run worse than it did before, I'm not sure if this is related. I'll step on the gas and the car seems to hesitate a bit and almost sputter (the acceleration isn't too smooth). Everything definitely feels better once the car is warmed up... but I can still hear ticking sometimes when I hit the gas. Once I'm up to speed, I don't really feel any loss of power. It seems ok.
If it gets better or goes away once warmed up it might be an exhuast leak at the exhaust manifold or turbo. DSMs had this happen as well.

Double check everything to make sure its tight or a gasket isn't blown out.

The reason it goes away once warm is because the metal expands and seals.

They mean "abuse" as in driving the car when clearly something is not right, as opposed to getting it taken care of before it gets potentially worse. Like if you are really sick, you're (in a roundabout way) abusing yourself if you don't see a doctor, even if you're not, say, out climbing mountains. That could easily be more "abusive" than driving a "heathly" car like a madman

Actually... I have that problem too. Thanks for the link. That creacking sound it pretty annoying from the window, I'd love to get that fixed.

The problem I'm talking about is more regular (constant) and is definitely coming from under the hood.

Do not drive it. Take it to the dealer.

In case there is a major problem, at least you should be covered.

I see your point.

But if my car was 100% stock with documented proof of being maintained and I discovered the bottom end was about to go, I would make sure that the whole engine will get replaced. Not catch it half way and have mitsu retighten loose bolts and bandaid a half destroyed engine. I would certainly hope a dealer wouldn't charge an "abuse" wildcard.

Get your car looked at, change oil, tear open paper filter and soak it in a glass container of thinner. Any metal shavings, dust, etc will be seen at the bottom of dish or caught in filter.

Likely something much less serious is making noise, but good luck nonetheless.

Keep an update.

It sounds like somebody is tapping one of those small jewelers hammers against a large metal block (very gently) at about the same speed as a person tapping their four fingers of one hand on a table.

It is usually very light, I probably wouldn't hear it with the radio on... but there have been times when it sounded louder.

I have an appointment to bring it on on Wednesday morning - it was the earliest I could work it out with work etc.

One quick update. I listened to it today again on the way to work. The tapping sound seems to come in just below 3,000 rpms and kind of fades away above 3,000. Once the car is warm, it doesn't seem to happen as much. And at highway speeds I don't notice it at all (or at least I can't hear it). Right around 3,000 rpms it is kind of loud... you can't miss it. (It's the type of sound that maybe I could expect with in my old beater 210,000 mile Volvo I used to own... but not in my near-new $30k sports car).

I'll bring her in tomorrow morning.
