EVO IX - HKS Exhaust Cam?

The car is going in to the shop this week to get the following:

- Walbro fuel pump
- E-Bay O2 housing
- HKS Downpipe
- Decat
- HKS Silent Hi-Power Catback
- HKS Lower Intercooler Pipe
- Defi Boost Gauge
- Ecutek (will be mepped both on the road & dyno)

I am also thinking of putting in a HKS 264 or 272 exhaust cam. I know that a few people on here have put in 272 & 280s, but I do not remember anyone putting in a 264. If you did put an exhaust cam on a IX, I would like to hear more about it. If you have installed one, what kind did you use & are you happy with the results?

If I remember correctly, I read from an AMS post that it should be good for 10-12whp (it was not stated which cam, but I assume the 272s).

Is it worth it to open up the head for 12hp? Do I have to change the headstuds etc? What do you guys think...

W/ the MIVEC on the intake side, by upgrading just the exhaust side should yield between 10-20hp alone on the IX. This practice actually came from Japan. A lot of tuners out there have seen siginficant gains by just changing the stock exhaust cams to 272 setup. I am fairly certain 264 ex won't hurt either. The result probably won't be as much as 272s, but still will gain some.

While you are at it, upgrading the headstuds is a good idea. Might as well do it at the same time.

This is not to put you down or anything but, why would you even bother w/the 264's when you can pay the same price for the 272's or 280's and get more power. Are you trying to be different or something? IMO I wouldn't even bother w/the 264's.

Not trying to be different. My car is used for daily driving - I pnly track it a few times a year and never drag race. From what I remember of AMS cam test, 264s make more power than 272s below 5k rpm, so it is a matter of choice. They were also saying that turbo spool is 100 rpm quicker with the 264s, so that is a trade off as well.

If I decide to go for it, I will most likely put in HKS 272s (will ask the tuner as well) but my choice will be between 264 and 272. I do not even consider 280s. Both due to the power band and smoothness of the idle...

PS: If you noticed, I also picked an exhaust (silent hi-power) that might not flow as well as some others, but I want a car that is both fast and easy on the ear
