aftermarket clutch issues
aftermarket clutch issues
a friend of mine, his name is going to remain annonymous at this time due to embarrassment, is having some major issues with his aftermarket clutch. he has 14k on his 04 evo with only a few thousand on the new clutch setup. he is running a clutchnet 6 puck, with a clutchnet race pressure plate, a new oem throwout bearing, and a stock resurfaced flywheel.
tonight we went to the track, he has been a few times with this clutch, and he lauched it and eased the clutch a little too much forcing it to spin. the clutch didnt want to grab at all the entire way down the track slipping into 3rd and instantly revving all the way out.
his clutch now feels at least twice as harsh when starting and there is a slight vibration in the clutch pedal while driving. there is something defintaly wrong at the moment, but what could it be? is it something that could be driven off, like something that can be worn back down? any suggestions would help at this point.

Forget remaining nameless....its me and my car. Just to get a little more into detail...you can olmost feel the 6 pucks "hammering" against the flywheel when engaging which is sometimes accompanied by a loud clanking noise. I'd really appreciate it if someone could shed some light on the situation.
Warped flywheel? Cracked flywheel? Worn disk?

Nameless,
The flywheel and pressure plate are very likely warped badly if the clutch slipped that long. Also when you oveheat a puck style clutch really badly, sometimes it will leave deposits on the flywheel and pressure plate where the material has fused itself to the mating surface and left chunks. Between the high and low spots and chunks of material, you have a problem. The good news is that it is probably not going to get worse because it is pretty bad already. You can't hurt it much more so you can drive on it, but you won't like to. You don't have to worry about the parts being cracked or blowing apart like other cars. The flywheel and pressure plate material is good stuff on the EVO and won't tend to blow up like most that use only grey iron castings.
