Manual Boost Controller : yes or no?

Alright. First... I know it's a no no. MBCs can be dangerous and blow motors. I KNOW this. However. I was considering running one for a couple weeks. For the record, I have a 2006 Evo 9 RS and I've not heard any recent horror stories on increased boost. Why do I want the MBC...? Here's why...

I ordered my twin carbon clutch, fuel pump, 660s, and some other gadgets, but I'm having some 5th gear CRUNCH issues and waiting for the dealer to fix it. So I want my transmission fixed before I go nuts with my reflash. I'll be tuning the reflash myself on a dynapak 4wheel dyno with EcuTech Software and running 21lbs. I'll also be tunning a second computer for methanol runs at 26psi. At that point the turbo is maxed and so is my factory recirc valve. This will be as far as I mode my Evolution, most likely.

So... should i run around on 19lbs (20?) for a little while or just wait. I've seen OEM fuel maps and we peg 10:1 on the top end, like Mitsu WANTS us to turn the boost up a bit. What's safe, what's not? Any personal testimonies? Thanks for any and ALL help!

Hmm, kinda funny. Since when is an MBC a no-no? There's thousands upon thousands of us with MBCs. Do you come from some other car type where people don't like MBCs? On average, we highly prefer them over anything else. I don't know where you got the idea it was such a big deal to run an MBC. It's very simple. We also have tons...and I mean TONSSSSSSSSSSS of threads answering your question about how much boost is safe to run. You can run 21-22psi on 93oct all day long with the proper tune. By proper tune, I mean one that isn't super lean with a lot of timing. The stock, rich tune won't stop you from running 21-22psi, but you're going to tune yourself soon anyway.

Why a second ECU just to run meth? You can run meth 24/7 with no problem...that's the reason for having meth. If you only do it occasionally, then you could just use race gas and crank the boost. That's a lot of trouble to go through just to run meth sometimes. Additionally, you have to go get it re-keyed by the dealer for the immobilizer and such. Our ECUs are not interchangeable. It's much simpler to just slap on an SAFC and tune it accordingly on top of the flash while raising boost, but to each his own, eh?

I like the AVCR on the IX as you can set the boost soliniod duty cycle by rpm to offset the MIVEC operation

With a MBC a IX will taper about 3 - 4 psi

19psi is less than stock on the EVO IX

Like Warr said 21-22 is good on 93oct

Meth vs. Boost

Incorrect...the 9 runs 19.5 psi or 1.33 bar on it's way to 5500 rpm, then as it heads toward redline, it tapers to 15.5 psi or 1.05 bar.

A manual boost controller would allow me to run a consistent boost level through RPM.

To answer the methanol question. Who better to ask than Warrtalon? The reason I'm having two flashes is done is a flash DOES NOT allow two seperate boost settings. I'm optimizing a 91 Octane STREET/PUMP GAS map and then seperately running a 26 pound map for 97 Octane and methanol. This will allow me to tune to ragged edge nearing emissions compliance and plug in another computer for racing. Rekeying the car is no big deal. We have the software as my dyno facility is about 30 feet from a dealership.

So, Warrtalon. To better answer my question...you could have simply answered.

Is it safe to run a MBC on a computer which IS NOT optimized for it? Instead of criticizing all my threads, in the future, simply try to keep up. If I wanted to run methanol 24/7, I woulda bought a bigger turbo, thus no needing the methanol. Had you read, my goal is efficiency from my stock set-up.

Back on track...thanks for the info, anyone else any cautions, warnings, go-aheads?
