dyno comparison in turbo mag

Hi guys,

Just a heads up. In the newest issue (June 03) of Turbo Mag, there is a dyno comparison between the Dynojet, DTS, Dynapack, Clayton and Superflow dynos. Unfortunately, they limited their dyno testing to local LA-area dynos and didn't drive up to northern Cal. to test our Dyno Dynamics unit (their goal was to test the same car on a bunch of dynos on the same day). Here are the wheel hp results of a stock 350Z:

Dynapack: 249.4
DTS: 257.6
Dynojet running Windows: 235.8
Dynojet running DOS: 243.7
Clayton: 265.7
Super Flow: 228.9

FWIW, our dyno reads 16-19% lower than the Dynojet (running windows).

Cheers,
shiv

Now that is some good info. I have always said that comparing dyno numbers from different dynos is pointless and misleading - these numbers just prove it.

Holy inconsistent numbers batman.

Havent the people who make dynos ever heard of SAE?!
Are those numbers even SAE corrected?

I would bet money that they are all SAE corrected.

AFAIK - SAE corrections only apply to horsepower readings. HP is always calculated from Torque. The dyno differences are due to differenet torque calculations based on the different types of dynos and different mathmatical computations to generate the raw torque numbers.

now here's a Q: is this all the same exact car? or different cars? meaning is this one guys 350z on each of these dyno's? or is it different Z owners that went to each dyno...

even though it's the product, you know some always pull a bit more than others, aka factory freaks

Some dyno companies actually correct torque as well but this is incorrect. SAE is ONLY for HP correction. I made 240 hp on the EVO I had in here but then again, I hear they get stronger as they break in so I wouldnt be surprised if I get even better baseline numbers next time he is here. BTW, he made 240 at 17.1 PSI.

Shame they didn't get a pull or two on your dyno though, Shiv. It's arguably the most contested dyno of Evo owners and probably the most loved dyno by Subaru owners.

That is probably Windows 98SE. Wait till they upgrade to XP home addition and MS sucks another 5hp out of the car.

Is anyone really surprised at the results?

yeah, too many other factors involved. I wonder out of all those dyno tests which ones are AWD capable? oh well, guess it's moot because I'm on the East Coast, haha.
