UnderDrive Light Weight Pulleys are GOOD

I did a little test and this is my car yours maybe different.

Results are in!

I ran 3 pulls back to back 3rd gear with the stock pulley set.
Put the UR pulley set on and then ran 3 more 3rd gear pulls within the same hour of the stock pulleys, on the same road. The only difference between the two is that the intake temps are 5 degrees higher with the UR pulleys, due to heat soak.

I can see NO noticeable difference in the Knock voltage with my EMS. So it doesn't and won't pull timing.

The motor is more responsive and seems to pull better with the light weight underdrive pulley set. In my case the pulleys are great. This is just to give a little real world results not just guesses. I recommend people to give these pulleys a second chance, I did as i have installed, removed, and reinstalled in fear of all the rumors about them.

What brand of pulley was this?

How difficult to install and time required?

Are there under drive pulleys for the alternator, etc for the EVO (AEM, etc)? I used these on other cars in the past and only seem to see the crank pulley available for the EVO... Am I just missing something?

honestly guys, i dunno why ppl undermine all the design and research that manufacturers put into engines. if mitsu knew that they could extract more performance from the 4G63 in this way, RELIABLY, don't you think they would have? i guess i'm one of the very few ppl who still consider reliability and trust the incredible amount of R&D that went into this engine. i would NEVER remove the balance shafts or replace the underdrive pulleys with lighter ones, i don't care which tuner will tell me how great it is. if, on the other hand, i was building a RACE engine and didnt care how long it would last because i had a magic wallet, sure.

The Supras engine is a different case, it is a 6 in line long crankshaft engine which is affected more by the efects of the damper pulley.

However, I agree that changing it just to get a few ponnies is not recommended unless you only use it for qualification in racing or drag racing.

I used to have a 6 in line engine that needed a lighter damper because the stock one kept breaking (due to the high rpms), in this specific case it was necesary and it was used only for drag racing.

Honestly, not trying to argue but there are places mitsu could have made more hp semi-reliabley and didn't...why not have more aggresive cams? Bigger turbo? Ported head/manifolds? Bette ic piping...all the things we modify as soon was we get the car that make more hp but don't take away from reliability. Cost, maintenance, etc all play factors.

I had a pulley on my WRX (I know I know, flat 4 vs inline 4) for 42k and no problems whatsoever...5 of my Subaru buddies have them and still run them with no problems.

I think pulleys are a great mod! I had a crank pulley on my last car for I don't know how many miles, and I never had a problem. It definitely revved a little bit lighter, and the throttle response was improved.

For those wondering about installation time... I tried to take my last car to a shop to have them do it, and they were going to charge me an hours worth of labor. I came back in an hour and they said it was the wrong pulley for the car. (wtf?) I knew they were lying so I decided to do it myself. It took ME an hour to do it, and I had NEVER done it before. Honestly it was a very easy install, and it would have been much quicker if my stock crank pulley wasn't still stuck on tight after I removed the bolt.

All I did was unplug my spark plugs, jack up my car, put the lug wrench on the bolt and propped the handle against the axle, crank the engine for a half second, and then removed the bolt the rest of the way. Also you have to loosen and remove the belt, obviously. After that it's just a matter of putting the new one on in place of the old one. Couldn't be easier! I'm about to do this again to my Evo when I get home. It's cool to hear that it gets about 10hp from what High PSI was saying. I wasn't expecting quite as much.

Wish I had the graph still but it really not only added power across the board but faster spool and better low end as per Turbo Trixx dyno.
