The clutch material on the stock disc is good, but the pressure plate is just ok. The ACT uses a Exedy disc also.
The ACT replaces the pressure plate with a stiffer unit (other clutchs change the materials and have a stock pressure plate). Some dont like the heavy peddle feel, and some never have had a type of clutch like it, and just dont like it.
Personally, I think the ACT is fine. With proper adjustment it has served me well. I compare it to driving a 70s muscle car - if you ever have had one of those before.
I havent heard much about Clutch Master clutchs, but those also are in the ACT price range.

Sorry to answer your first Q - Mitsu wanted 1800 for parts and labor on the stock clutch.
I knew mine was fine, its actually sitting in my garage - 90% left on it. I changed it because I really didnt like the stock feel. And with what I do (drag racing and whatnot - I wanted some insurance)
I got my ACT for 475ish from Lancershop and helped my mech. put it in for around 450 in labor. You pretty much have to take the upper intake off, undertray (or bumper and undertray - then you can get to the TC and trans) so most of the time was spent taking it apart and putting it back together.

Anytime.
I reused my stock flywheel, just resurfaced it a tiny bit, and it was fine. But I also didnt have that many miles on it, and it was clean.
Good luck and happy driving.

IMO the stock clutch is very good. If you don't do any drag racing, don't like a heavy pedal and only intend on doing a few bolt-on mods at most, it should serve you well. My stocker lasted 40k under the above circumstances. I only replaced it because I got a new trans under warranty. I went with the RRE "X-clutch" (very similar to ACT) with ACT street disk and lightweight flywheel. Due to my abusing the clutch I'm on my 2nd "X-clutch" after 20k on the first, but I really like this one which is why I bought another. When properly adjusted it works very well. If you can stand a more grabby clutch disk with a heavy pedal you will like the ACT. Just my 2cents

Over 51k on the stocker. I thought it was going out so I bought the parts for it, I'm still waiting. Yeah what you have to do is buy all the parts separately, so you order like the flywheel, pressure plate, disc, throwout bearing (I think that's it) for the turbo since it will have both the Lancer and Evo parts on there.
