Odd Drivetrain Whine...

I'm a little worried, because I began hearing a whine that is coming from somewhere in front of me in the car.

I assume it is the drivetrain, because the sound stops when I'm under 10 mph. However, it doesn't seem to change pitch or intensity, and it only occurs under decelleration.

I searched through many different threads, and didn't find one that seemed to fit the description of my whine. It is pretty quiet, but the pitch is high enough and grating enough to be kind of painful to the ears. The oddest part is, like I said, it doesn't seem to vary in intensity or pitch with speed and only occurs under decelleration.

By the way, this is not the usual decel noise you get from the Yokos. I've heard that the whole time.

Is this the transfer case? I only have 3500 miles on my 06, and I have never launched it. I have shifted aggressively now and again, but not abusively.

Any help or comments are appreciated.

~Brad

tranny fluid...at least that what they told me. I had the same noise and they told me it was my synchros and the oil that they had put in. Im not sure if its syncroshift though but im sure that thats what you should use.

i would definitely check the fluid levels in the tranny and transfer case. all you have to do is take the fill plugs out and see if any comes out, if not, i'd top them off. i know mine new from the dealer was underfilled and i had to add some.

Drain tranny fluid, then the TC fluid. if doesn't go away, could be your TC. Have them look it over.

Thanks a ton for the input. I hope it is something as simple as low fluid.

However, I have never been "under the car" yet and I'm not sure if checking the levels and refilling is within my ability level. I can do oil changes, but this seems maybe a bit more challenging.

Any links to tutorials on these fluid changes or should I just take it in to the dealer?

If it is trash, it will be a warranty item since there is no way I thrashed it hard enough to ruin a t-case that was properly working in the first place in 3.5k miles!

I am thinking more and more that I just need to flush and refill the drivetrain fluids. I should have done that after the break-in anyway. Lesson learned.

In order to figure this out we really need a sound clip. There are 1,000,000 sounds that come from this car. The drivetrain makes 98% of them. To further that, 99% of those come from the tcase/tranny area.

I bet this is just your standard decel gear mesh sound... what decel noise from the yokos could you be talking about??
