Stud install causing gasket leak

Mitsubishi found a head gasket leak this morning during a routine oil change. They tell me that whoever (in this case RnR) did not replace the gasket when they installed the head studs.

They are quoting 1112.12 for the fix. It is either that or sacrifice a weekend and do it myself, something I would rather not do.

Nevertheless, I was impressed with their ability to discover the problem.

This job appears beyond my expertese, any info on what this job would entail? Looks like the head needs to be pulled.

Any opnions?

many places will install head studs by doing the one at a time method.

not sure if rnr does this.

how much did rnr charge you for the install? chances are they did the 1x1 method which would make the valve cover gasket pinch leak extremely likely... trust me chances are its coming from the valve cover

As I can remember, a couple hundred for cams, fuel pump, studs, and injectors.

I will inspect the valve cover. Any specific locations to look at?

Well, I would first look for the obvious. You have the car right in front of you. First I would look around where the valve cover meets the cylinder head for traces of oil. If there's alot of oil you may need to clean that area up and drive the car a little and re-check again. I would also get under the car and remove the plastic undertray and see if there is a trail of oil. That there will tell you if it's coming from the valve cover or cylinder head. Good luck.
