Can someone explain mods to me?

Can someone be so kind as to explain the different types of mods and their uses/effects? FOr example what's a cat-back? what's a turbo timer? what's an engine idler? how do they effect your car's performance?

I appreciate any help you have.

Peace...

cat back: refers to an exhaust system that starts at the catalytic converter. Contrast a cat back exhaust with a turbo-back exhaust.

turbo timer: device that keeps your engine idling after you shut off the car. Allows your car to cool down, preventing damage to the turbo / etc.

engine idler - see above.

As far as performance, a turbo timer is just a maintanence / safety item. No performance boost.

A cat back exhaust improves the sound, loses some weight (~10-20 pounds) and can add a few horsepower on to a stock engine. With more significant modifications a freeer-flowing exhaust becomes even more important.

Brief intro:

Cat Back: Short for backwards from Catalytic Converter. That is the exhaust system from the catalytic converter to the end of the muffler... It specifically excludes the catalytic converter. Stock exhausts are often more tuned for sound than for power, so if you're willing to sacrafice both a good note and a quieter exhaust, you can replace the exhaust from the "cat-back" to increase power.

Turbo Back: Same as above, except that the catalytic converter, the collector and the downpipe are also changed. In the Evolution, this tends to yield more power gains, with little if any, extra noise.

Boost Controller A turbo generally compresses far more air than the engine can safely use. That, and also there's a limit to the speed a turbo is designed to run. Once the safe level for either engine or turbo is reached, the exhaust gas is routed around the turbo, so you don't overspin the turbo or over-compress the engine. This is done with a device called a "wastegate". With a boost controller, you can decide when the wastegate opens to bypass the excessive exhaust gasses. If you've modified the engine, generally you can increase boost. You do this by delaying the opening of the wastegate using the boost controller.

Turbo Timer A turbo requires oil to remain lubricated and cooled. When the engine shuts down, the turbo still needs to cool down adequately. If you just shut off the engine immediately after a hard run, oil stops flowing, and the turbo doesn't cool evenly/properly. This can cause premature wear to your engine. You can do one of two things: Idle the engine before leaving the car, or let the turbo timer kill the engine after you've left. Many people find the second option easier.

Engine Idler Wouldn't have a clue.

Okay, that's all you asked... But there are a million more mods you could ask about... So ask away.

1st of all... Thank you ever so much for the information provided... The problem is that I am not very technical when it comes to cars, but it is starting to be a new hobby of mine. I have driven an Evo Vii Numerous times, and now that I am purchasing a new car, I have decided on the EVO Viii. It wont be released here until October, So I plan on learning as much as possible about Mods now, so that I will be well informed in the future. The ones listed were the only ones I ran across in the forum so far. Any others that can be explained would be greatly appreciated.
