I am a moderate diyer that in the future would probably be pulling the motor to upgrade, and am looking for someone to create a writeup on the steps on doing so. It is good for guidelines and comes in handy to make sure no mistakes are made. The writeup for the clutch install from EvoMoto.com was a helpful guide to take out the tranny.

I am also looking for the answer of will it take removing the tranny to pull the motor or are the bolts connecting to the motor accessible and only need to remove those. I did not seem to answer my own question when I pulled the tranny.

Mods, when/if this is created please remove this thread or post and rename the title to Engine pull writeup or something.

Looking for this to go along with some of the great writeups on this board, we have the clutches, and we are getting the fuel ones (although missing some of the writeups, but have a database on parts), and with the huge growth of built 2.0's, swaps of 2.1's-2.4's this could help.

I would imagine the rear motor mount would be the only pita using this method.

 

Hrm... so umm how did that come out without the tranny being removed. Haha...

 

Tranny removal is not necessary to pull the motor.

And actually the EvoMoto clutch removal 'How-To' is about 2 steps away from having the motor out. Follow that procedure and just unbolt the passanger side motor mount and I think that is it

 

But in that clutch writeup that has all the things with the axles and brakes and yada yada, I was wondering if it is possible to only unbolt from the tranny, do the mounts and pull. Can you reach the bolts connected to the tranny without all those steps.

 

hehe, lower the motor to the ground and pull the frame up. The pic i posted was from bolsen's project. My motor has yet to come out

 

You should be able to reach all of the bolts, but if you want to pull the engine and tranny apart, you're going to have to slide the tranny out 6-7" to get the input shaft out of the way. And if you're pulling the tranny back that far, you need most of the other steps, so it turns out to be basically the whole process anyway, unless you just take off the transfer case and pull the tranny/engine out as one. You won't be able to rotate either the engine or the tranny enough (with everything else still bolted in place) to pull the engine off without dropping the tranny down. Either way the transmission is coming out of the car.
