This subject is very subjective. For some people a GT35R would fulfill their demands, for others they feel like a Evo with GT35R driven in trafic with the A/C on and high elevation and hot as hell is the worst turbokit you could buy sort of speak.

It depends on what your goals are. Per instance I am happy with my stock turbo set up, I can run 12.4-12.5 run after run here in Tucson while I know other people that can hardly break into the 12's with huge turbokits.

You must balance your options, turbokits are laggy sometime soo laggy that stock turbos would outperform them. Having people on this forum that comfortably manage to trap 120mph on stock turbo and run 11's I think you have to give a chance to your stock turbo and maximize its huge capabilities before you dump $$$$.

Just my .2c

Carlos

TTP engineering (Scott) traps mid 120s mph and runs mid to low 11s on a Evo 8 turbo. The Evo 9 turbo is even more capable.

I am a hardcore drag racer, I love racing anything on wheels at the track. Our Evo 9 blasted a 12.2 with a budget of $1000 here in the AZ heat and elevation ( that is a high 11 s car in the east coast in the winter).
I am a strong believer that the stock Evo 9 turbo is perhaps the best choice turbo for the basic bolt ons:

Methanol ,TB,CAI,MBC,flash.

I would have to argue that while a GT35R would give you higher Dyno numbers and better top end the stock Evo Turbo can turn in circle on many other turbokits at low and midrange and sometimes overall (all rpm ranges).

Honestly, spend the money on the basic bolt ons first, try the stock turbo and if you don't like it you can always aply those mods towards the GT35R.

I am trying to not compromise my great relationship with many of my local Tucsonian Evo Owners buddies but Cmon if you don't see it like me then we are not on the same boat.

Friends that ran turbokits in Tucson:

Mr Vanderpool's Evo 8 459whp with Isamu turbokit plus methanol
Ray 3037 TurboKit 458whp
PJ GT37R plus methanol 500whp plus badly tuned
Evan GT35R 350whp

The botton line is that the fastest ever timeslips in Tucson SIR came from the same people with the stock turbo

Ray 12.4
PJ 12.4
Me 12.4
Slowcar (Abner 12.4)
Scott 12.3 NOS

Do you want any more proof? People sometimes have this fetish with making "big dyno numbers". Reliability and driveability are number one in my book.
Build yourself a realiable car that can run on 91-93oct without fear of breaking anything.

Carlos

What does that mean? Are you planning to autoX, drag, or take weekend trips to Laguna Seca? Or all of the above? Is your Evo a daily driver? Will it be fed pump gas or will it see some high octane stuff was well? There's really no "best" turbo. There's only better turbos depending on your applications and goals. Building a 9 second dragster with the stock 16G isn't going to happen, but neither is a good autox car running a GT40.

all I can say is a 2.3 and a 50 trim is a sweet track setup. 500 whp with 450 torque with 272's on a FLASH, my car FLY'S!!!!

I would say that a 50 trim for a day to day car puts out very good power for a pump gas car. Contact some of the vendors such as AMS, BUSHUR and tell them what you want to use the car for, those guys wont lead you astray.

Well, if you're looking for a road course setup.... go with a 2.3L motor kit, and then a GT30 or 35 turbo.... depends on your suspenion and wheel/tire setup. No point in having a lot of power if you can't put it down.
