How to get more appreciable gains from stock turbo?
As of now, my evo has a cone filter,licp,10.5 h, full catless exhaust, hallman boost controller,272 cams,mr dv, meth at 28psi, and an act hd clutch. With the new turbo buschur will be pushing I should see nice gains...but i am getting to the point(never thought i would say this)that i may want to stop spending money on the evo. I love every min of it but i will just keep going and going.1800 plus install+tune, and then injectors+install rounds everything to at least $3000 more. I would love to keep that in my pocket. So, the real question is how can i further maximize the stocker to the point where i can hang with 50trims or pump gas bigger turbos? Gsc 280's,revolvers,bump psi a little higher, full ic,or maybe a stock evo 9 turbo are things that have run through my head. With the mods I have now i laid down 373hp and 392tq in a 93degree dyno room(dynojet). Please help me out, I would like to hear some suggestions. Thx guys
The nice thing about this forum is that you will get a lot of ideas usually. However, I am stumped when I ask myself what I would alter or upgrade in your case. Maybe someone else will see something, but I think you've pretty much taken the stock turbo as far as it'll go for daily driving purposes.
You've reached a point of diminishing returns. The 280's are kinda overkill for the stock turbo. The intercooler upgrade'll cost you about $800 for 10-15 HP. Higher lift cams like the Revolvers'll cost a bit and would beg for a bigger turbo. Boosting over 28# on the stock turbo on pump+alky is kinda iffy for day to day use. Maybe you could run 30+ psi on race gas+Alky if you had something to prove.
A IX turbo would give some slight benefit at 28+ with Alky, but again...would it be worth the investment and more important will you be satisfied with a 15 HP gain for $750, and the install kit plus manhours.
At your level, and you've really laid down some impressive numbers for a stock turbo, you almost have to move up to a 50-Trim, or 3076R, unless you wanna go the 20G-9-5-LT route. I guess the LT @ $1700, could indeed be an economical compromise.

If you go with, either a bigger intercooler, EVO9 turbo or different cams you will need a retune.
Ultimately if you want the power of a bigger turbo, you'll have to get a bigger turbo, injectors and tune. Injector aren't very expensive for the EVO and you won't be saving much money there ... you still have to pay for the tune and whatever other parts you want to put on.

I thought the current 20g-9-5 needed race gas or meth to realy shine. From what I understand, the gains at stockish boost level are not worth the money but when you turn up the boost it's another story..
I say pick up the current 20g-9-5, sell your current turbo and when the new BR 20g comes out, if it proves to be the world beater, get the 9-5 upgraded to the new spec. He already said the current 9-5 would be upgradeable to the new model.
You already have a chemical intercooler in the form of alky so I don't think you need to dump a bunch of money on an upgraded one. I'm sure the stocker is a restriction at the boost you are running though so maybee you would get more out of than most.... I say keep your eyes open for a used IC, or spend $120 on the ebay IC.

bigger turbo man, its that time...like 3076 bigger, not 20-G-9-5-386347538764, its bs, they aren't really a true 20 G. people put down like 30 more whp with that turbo. 4TUN8 has "the real 20G" and put down like 415 whp, but at that point i might just go slightly bigger with a GT3071, 3076, whatever
bigger intercooler will make more turbo lag, people have broken 400whp on stock intercooler, i would stick with the stocker. for the money it wouldnt be worth it.
maybe bigger cams?
drivetrain parts, such as light flywheel? cf or some driveshaft? light wheels?
thinking of weight helps a lot too.
your fighting a battle you cant by trying to get much more out of the stock turbo IMO. you have just about all the supporting mods, NOW is when people upgrade to a sizable turbo and make all those supporting mods worth it.
good luck let us know what you decide

I would say stop where your at. Maybe add an aftermarket intercooler wich does NOT require a new tune. You can also get the perrin crank pulley, hyper ground wires, exhaust manifold, maegan o2 housing, lighter wheels. Those are the only mods i can think of that dont require a tune. If you wanna go bigger then get the wallbro fuel pump, 1000cc injectors, jun cams, and a new custom tune.
