I believe that's the bearing that holds the driveshaft in the middle.

Correct its the center bearing on the drive shaft where the two connect connect.

There was a thread not to long ago about loud metal scrapping noises, it was his carrier bearing biting the dust becuase the seals cracked and the grease was pushed out of the housing.
