Need your advise please... (spark plugs)

I took my '05 MR to the stealership today for my 30K service and they quoted something over $600 for it!?!? Anyway, when I told them I had the free maintenance coupons, they said "in that case all we do is change the oil and filter and air filter" Well, that's cool I guess. After all that's what says to do in the manual... However, the service advisors told me that they suggest replacing the plugs, replacing the tranny and diff fluids and doing an injector/ TB service. They say that they recommend changing plugs every 17.5K miles !!!!.... I wonder why I should change my plugs so often? Actually, why change them at all since the car seems to run just fine? Those plugs are platinum plugs which are supposed to last much longer than standard plugs and are quite expensive (they charge $100 for changing them). They also charge about $250 for the tranny/TC fluid change. Is this really necessary?

Anyway, the big question is do I really need all this extra, expensive items or is this just another way for them to generate income from by bank account? BTW, the schedule maintenance suggested by in the manuals does not mention any of these "extras" as being necessary......

The plugs are Iridium, not platinum, they do last quite awhile, but they do need to be replaced around 15k.

Regular maintainance isn't cheap from the dealer, you HAVE TO replace the tranny/TC fluids at recommended intervals if you want the car to last.

The Iridium plugs are somewhat expensive, but you can buy them and change them yourself to save a few dollars.

Since your car is still under warranty, and (I'm assuming) not modified, you might as well keep servicing the car at the dealership and keep all records, as they are your proof that recommended maintainance has been done and they cannot use it as an excuse to deny a warranty claim if you ever have one..

Well, YES you DO need to do these things, but YES this is all a way for Mitsubishi to generate additional income. As long as the car is properly maintained with the proper parts and fluid, you can have it done anywhere reputable AS LONG AS YOU GET DOCUMENTATION that shows it was done properly.

The manual does have a service schedule in it somewhere, it should have the intervals for driveline fluids, oil changes, plug and timing belt, etc...

You are right about the tranny/tc/diff fluids. The service manual specifies changing those at the 30K mile interval. It does not say anything about the sparkplugs though.. The manual specifies changing the iridium tipped plugs at the 60K mile interval. The manual also indicates a change of coolant as well as replacing the belts for generator, water pump, power steering pump.

The free part of the maintenance is basically limited to oil/filter, air filter changes and inspection of hoses, fluids, brakes, etc. My guess is that I need to replace all those fluids and belts to make sure no warranty issues come up. However, I think I'll have those things done at Dyno4mance because I have a higher level of confidence on Andrew than on the dealership techs if for no other reason that I can watch Andrew perform all the maintenance and be sure it's done right..

OK, I got the following things done:
1 changed oil and filter (dealer free service)
2 changed air filter (dealer free service)
3 changed tranny fluid
4 changed diff fluid
5 changed TC fluid
6 replaced serpentine belt

Items 3 ~ 6 were performed at Dyno4mance by Andrew As usual, I got great service, professionally done and for $120 less than the dealer wanted for just the fluid changes..... The plugs, seem to be just fine for now and according to Andrew, the coolant does not need to flushed and changed as often as the dealer suggests because our winters are not very severe and the coolant looks fine..

Dealers' suggested service cost: $ 600+
Total cost of Dyno4mance service: $ 227.00

I can definitely recommend Dyno4mance for all you EVO service and needs. Andrew rocks!
