Clutch for Evo8?
Clutch for Evo8?
Hey all,
Anyone know of a good aftermarket clutch for USDM Evo8 available in the US? My stock clutch is fine, and i rarely do any launches over 3000 RPM, but given the walk-around
is giving me on the noise my car is making on decel, ive half a mind to see if i can find the problem myself. After reading various message boards, listening to WRX people, etc ... im not entirely sure my problem is with the tranny. Indeed, it could be clutch or possibly center diff.
I really like the RPS clutch in my VR4, but not sure if RPS makes a clutch for USDM Evo8 yet.

Changing clutches is a pain. So I would like to get something that will last. I will never drag race the car but I do want to be able to launch hard for autox without killing the clutch.
I was thinking that a ACT, Clutch Masters or Centerforce may supply a higher capacity single plate clutch.

The AP is only rated at 320, though we have used tehm on WRX's with much more power and they held up well.
Exedy also has their single plate (Hyper Single) thats a nice unit, 6 puck, spring hub cerametallic disk with pressure plate and integrated flywheel.

out of all the manufacturers you have mentioned, i can get them all. i, however dont know which one will fit your needs. what about rmr? any word or specs on theirs? im setting up an account with them this week. already working with blair (sales manager)
can someone please explain to me the advatages of a twin plate clutch? Is it just for more grabbing power? Also, would it allow for more Hp transfer or is this still lost to the transmission/diffs? Thanks
You guys are so anxious to sell him something you aren't even bothering to answer his questions....
A multi plate clutch is designed to help hold more torque (clutches are rated by torque). The extra plates are designed to give you more slip for the same amount of pressure. Pressure is determined by the pressure plate, of course. The final torque rating has a lot to do with the pressure plate and the surface materials used. Another big factor when deciding what to get is the hub design. The sprung hub is essentially a separate center piece (attached to tranny) which is attached to the outer piece (grabbing the flywheel) via springs which will extend and compress a little during fluctiations in load (like engagement) to provide a bit of give. Sprung hub helps absorb the shock to your transmission.
If you start asking for very high torque rated clutches in single disk, you will either get a solid hub clutch pushed on you (engages like a lightswitch, bad for your tranny and your wife) or a clutch made of more expensive materials that will grab and hold better but get expensive or won't last (and you don't want to change the EVO clutch a lot). Again, the multi disk clutches, while solid hub, so to speak, have several disks to slip during engagement to make them more "slippable".
Check with Z1, I believe they may have the solution for you. While I sell WRX and EVO parts, I'm not a vendor on here at the moment. I have spoken to them, though and they are more than just an internet vendor; they know their stuff quite well.
You can always email me, etc. for any free advice without getting pressed to buy something.
BTW, please consider that the clutches Z1 mentioned included a flywheel, which according to the dealer must also be changed when installing a clutch.
Happy boosting,
Mark
