Evo engine with LOWER KNOCK!
Okay, so I posted a while ago that I was hearing a ticking or knocking sound from my Evo 8 motor. My car is the high mile one on here with about 10,300 miles in 4 weeks of ownership. I will summarize what is up:
Thursday (5/15/03):
Drove car to dealer and had them listen to engine. Said ticking was normal. I asked if there was supposed to be a knocking in the morning when it was cold and they said it was normal, if it was a knock worth concern it would be loud and do it all the time.
I said, "Okay, thank you," and left.
Saturday (5/17/03):
Being paranoid as I am I dropped the car off at the dealer for them to examine it COLD on Monday and to change the oil, flush the brakes, and do a transmission service. When your own mother says, "What is that noise in your motor," you know something is up.
Monday (5/19/03):
Dealer calls and says, "You were not planning on picking this up today were you," and I asked why? Dealer says they are on the phone with Tech Line and they have killed each cylinder one at a time to try and isolate noise which has not worked. I tell them to take their time and find out what is wrong but ask, "So, that is not 'normal' then," and the dealer says, "No".
Tuesday (5/20/03):
Dealer calls my house and tells my mother they are working on it still, but they know nothing yet. Still keeping my car for another day.
Wednesday (5/21/03):
I am driving to work and my dealer calls me and says, "You got the oil changed midway on that trip you just took, right," and I tell them I did. They say they need a receipt so I give them the dealer name in South Carolina that did it and they can call and get it faxed from that Mitsu dealer. I ask what is the update and they say, "Well, there is a lower knock in your motor". They are having a district guy come and look at the car.
ARGH!! What would they have done if I just followed their 'everything is normal' thing and had not been paranoid and brought the car back?? What could be wrong with my car?? Any help or advise please.

dealersYou did the right thing. Always follow your gut feeling.
Nothing much you can really do until they figure out what's going on.
My basic suspicion would be the quality of gas you are getting in your area... In Japan the base quality is 95RON... I think
Anyway, keep us updated. Hang in there
Re: Evo engine with LOWER KNOCK!
If it is like a tappet noise then it is a common "problem".... air has gotten into the lash adjusters you can read more about it in the MLR FAQ.
But jeeze man 10,300 miles in a month, you trying to set a record or something?

Hmm, so this is a slight ticking when you start the engine cold right? and it does go away?
Cause mine ticks when cold and goes away eventually.. I thought it normal because this is common on DSMs.. Mine has 5K miles.
Let us know, cause i guess i may be next
I get this too in the morning when i start it up. Haven't changed any fluids. Seems to go away however after that. It doesnt sit outside of course so its not something like that.

Mitch - do they even know what is wrong yet? Seems like they're hedging their bets (i.e. coming up with an excuse) so they don't have to fix it - likely because they're morons and can't figure out what's really wrong with it. I think you should get, in writing, explicit documentation of what is wrong with your engine from the dealer. It'll be up to you to prove that it's unrelated to the "abuse"
that One Lap caused...
Is this O'daniel or University Park?

Is it the lifter noise, then, or not? Does it sound like a diesel engine when cold? Or is it something else?

That's obviously bull****. A lot of Evos are raced in rally or other competition events without any engine problems whatsoever.

The dealer says that they want to put a short block in the car. I asked why the regional rep said it only needed bearings and a crank and the dealer said, "Well, yeah, it could use that...but it probably need the short block. You won't know until we get it apart". Guess what, I don't know if I feel comfortable with that.
Point is, Mitsubishi is royally screwing themselves if they poke me on this. WestSideBilly knows....i buy a LOT of cars.
