just went and checked and there no oil in the radiator or overflow tank. The dipstick is all oil. I looked at it in more detail...kinda difficult to see the back of the engine but it def looks soaked with oil. The interesting thing i just noticed is that i saw oil on back side of where the head cover meets the engine (ie the red top part meets the metal).

I've been going to the dealer since day one...don't hide anything and they know everything that's done to the car....nothing to be afraid off as i'm not out to screw the dealership or mitsu. whatever it is, i'm willing to pay for as it was my choice to mod the car and i knew i'll have to pay for repairs

If you can start the car and take the oil fill cap off and hover your hand over it with the car running. If you can feel air with the exhaust pulses then its def. the HG.

where the red top part meets metal is the valve cover meeting the head. You can either torque the valve cover tighter (be careful, I think the proper spec. is 20" pounds. That's right INCH pounds, not FOOT pounds), or clean the mating surfaces and the gasket to get all oil residue off and see if you can get a better seal. It's impossible to change cams without getting oil on the sealing surfaces, and very few take the time to clean that particular surface before remounting the gasket (I know I didn't the 5 or so times I've taken the valve cover off).

I would estimate 30% of Evos leak oil at the HG stock and with ARP studs. If compression is fine and coolant level remains constant, there is no problem.

tried it, but honestly couldn't figure out the difference. there was definitely something coming out (exhaust gas or air) as i got oil on my palm

Thanks for your input. I had cams and arp bolts installed about 6-8 months back and this oil problem is pretty recent (pretty much in the last 2 months). Had the oil changed 2 months ago and the dealership didn't say anything and i check my oil levels every other fillup. I've had to top off fluid a couple times in the past few months though. wish there was a shop close by so i could take the car over. the closest is about a 3-4 hr drive.

Here are the proper tools to tell if you have a HG leak.

If it is leaking at where the red meets the head then it is a valve cover gasket leak. If you are dermined to have a blown HG then if you keep searching I'm sure you can find somebody who will charge you the big bux to fix it. Or, you can put on a new gasket and be done with it.

not determined at all. i hope it's the valve cover. As i said earlier, it was the dealer who told me they saw the leak at the HG. I hope it's the oil leak from the valve cover that's made it to the head part causing them to think that. Will take the car in next week and have them look at the valve cover. In the meantime, i'm going to clean it up and see if I see the leak at the valve cover over the weekend.

I have arp head studs and my evo leaks some oil from HG but its been like that for nearly 15k of high boost with no issues...if I were to do it again I would have never installed the arp head studs...

My freeze plug blew out 2x on me already and the second time i had them do a compression test and it was leaking... The hg was hurt but not badly...

Like everyone said, if you had a bad hg, you be pushing coolant out.. If all coolant levels are the same and constant, then the leak is coming from somewhere else
