Thanks guys for the honest opinions! Yes, i guess its the JDM specced ones with all the gremlins... what's the price like for a USDM turbo ? Are they aftermarket companies/US Mitsi dealers selling them or is it only available stock on the car?

Alternatively, which aftermarket turbo will be a good replacement with similar flow capacity/power specs?

thanks again

Liew, you can buy stock turbos all over the place...at shops...from Mitsu...or from Evo owners who upgraded. Try to get a USDM IX turbo used on here for $500.

The JDM GSR and GT turbos are just fine. They dont have the magnesium wheel. All you have to do is buy one of those, or buy that car instead of the MR/RS. If you have your heart set on an MR/RS, go talk to mitsu and see if they know anything about the magnesium wheel problem in your area. Like someone else said, Im pretty sure they released a new version and have it fixed. Either way, it would be warrantied.

The Us 16G Evo turbos are very good.

You may not have seen a turbo blow up, but they do blow up. When a turbo blows up, alot of smoke will be coming out of the exhaust. White, Grey, Black. All kinds of smoke. Ther will be oil all over the place and out of the exhaust. And may be coolant too if the lines break. Age will blow a turbo up. Over boosting will also blow it up. Lots of shot of NOS will blow it up for sure too.

Warrtalon,

thanks for the advice. However, getting a used unit - would i need to rebuild it i.e. change some parts before bolting it on?

Chris,

The problem here is that the official Mitsu dealer only carries the IX which i believe is the JDM version (direct import from Japan). Asking them about the turbo will most likely bring stares..

The grey importers only have limited units of the 7, very rarely the 8...so, in a way, my choices are pretty limited. I'm not keen on used ones either as they most likely would have been thrashed by the previous owners or modded. I don;t want to spend more dough tearing down the engine and rebuilding it just to be safe.

Nah, man, not at all. Just snag one off a IX, which is going to be less than 20k miles and probably less than 5k miles, then slap it right on. I got one for $450 with 4k miles on it.
