Evo problem... Boost
Hey guys,
I don' know what seems to be the problem, but my Evo cuts out around 5500 RPM in basicly any gear. You can hear pop noise, then it keep going then pop again.
It happened to me before, and it kicked out code saying "engine overboost", since then I turned down my boost to 18 psi. It was about 2 months ago. Didn't have that problem all this time. Noe it's back.
It happens once in a while. Like today was going on freeway it started happening in 3rd and 4th. Got off the freeway and 2nd, 3rd was fine. I don't understand what might be the problem.
With all my mods in sig. I wasn't tuned yet, so I'm wondering if custom tune by Al will fix it. But if not, then what?

they are good, ball and spring type or manual bleed are the best in my exper with rx7s, but the factory wastegate sucks, i would port thr wastegate pon teh stock turbo and take off the flapper and wled o liek a 50mm honda valve instead, did that on my rx7 and it worked wonders

I forgot about this, but there is a 'boost limit' value programmed into the ecu. It's only '245' (which is the 'load' value) up to 5500 rpms and drops lower after that. It's very possible that you're hitting the limit and getting boost cut. I'm hitting over that and my car is completely stock aside from me removing the boost restricitor pill at the solenoid and retuning it. I raised the limit up to '260' in my settings.
Skold, it's not boost creep. His MBC is very good, he has no need to port his wastegate, and boost creep is NOT common on the Evo with those mods and those LOW boost levels.
OP, it's basic, common, simple fuel cut. You should never in a million years have all those mods without a tune. That makes absolutely no sense. It can do nothing but harm your car, and as you've seen, it has caused you to turn your boost well below stock just to be able to drive the car somewhat normally. The fuel cut problem has returned most likely due to the cold weather. The air is denser, which means for a given boost, you are flowing more air. Once the MAF reads a certain amount of airflow, the ECU cuts fuel. It's a preset fuel cut, but it is not really a danger point. A tune will remedy this, and it won't happen again, then you will be able to run a solid 21-22psi daily without it cutting in any gear. It looks like you have about 2k in mods there, but you don't have the single most important mod - a tune. What's worse, is a full custom tune would cost half as much as your TI cat-back and would make 2-3X the power, so I just can't understand why you'd do that...

Now guys, don't think I'm dumb. I know how useful a tune is, and that's why I want one from Al. My parts went on the car not too long ago, and I wanted to get complete set of things before getting a tune. I was told the same think by a shop.
I want to get lower IC pipe, Cams, and then get a tune. Just been waiting for all those things, so I guess that's my excuse...... And I'm planning on having it done within a month. Now days I don't drive my Evo a lot
Sorry

No need to wait on all those parts. In the meantime, you're doing more harm than good, and you're also not getting much, if anything, out of your mods. If you decide to wait on all your parts before getting tuned, then you should not install any of them until you're ready to get tuned. It's easy and simple to get a quick base tune for $200 from Dynoflash, then go spend another $300 later to get a full custom flash after everything is installed. You end up spending $500 total instead of $400, but that extra $100 keeps your car running well at all times while also ensuring you are never driving around with a bunch of untuned mods like you are doing now.
It's especially bad to be doing that with an Injen intake and a fuel pump. I have no idea why you installed that stuff when you knew you weren't getting tuned. I would have left them off the car...
