My winter project. Not that i want to but have to.

Usually, when someone have a winter project, it’s something that they want to do. In my case it’s something I have to do and I was not looking forward to it. If you have read some of my other post, you would know that I had tranny and t-case problem about 2 months ago and I’m pissed because I haven’t been able to play in the snow. I love the Evo but I hate $hitsubishi because a $10 seal is going to cost me $2400 in damage and a day of back breaking work.

It took me and a friend 5 hours to pull the tranny and t-case (our first time on a Mitsu) and it will probably take us longer to put it back in. the TOB keep getting hung up, I thought it was popped but it wasn’t, didn’t know how far I had to pry. This is something that I don’t want to do again anytime soon. I did it so I could learn more about the Evo. I would gladly pay a shop $600 to do a clutch job.

Replacing the front open diff with an RS LSD.

The pressure plate has seen better days. I tried to launch once but end up burning the heck out off the clutch and never tried again.

The clutch disk looks like it could go for another 15k miles (the car has 32k miles now).

And for the finally, the $10 seal that’s causing me all this headaches. This is the broken seal that allowed tranny fluid to go into the t-case and cause the ring and pinion to go out.

the broken seal is in the t-case, this seal keeps the tranny fluid in the front diff carrier out off the t-case (i think). i'll probably have to replace the whole t-case since you can't buy the ring and pinion gears separately. i'll probably just pick up a rebuilt t-case. i don't know if i could just get it re-shimmed so the whine noise goes away. i got the LSD for $350 with 10k miles on it.

If I'm not mistaken, Mitsu doesn't give any specs as far as the t-case goes. It is possible to re shim it trying to go by contact patch, but it may not last very long. I think in most cases, the ring gear is shot, so re shiming it wont get rid of the noise but it could be worth a shot. I have the same issue with my t-case, it is annoying and at some point I will break down and buy one.

is it a stock disk and presure plate? i wish i would have known earlier, i would have probably take it off your hands. i just needed a cluth that will last me a year or so, so i didn't want to spend too much money on a clutch. i ended up getting a Exedy oem replacement. do you guys re-surface fly wheels?

the ring and pinions don't look like they are scored that bad. i only drove it maybe 50 miles after the noise came. i'll take some pics of the ring and pinion up close tomorrow.

Wouldnt hurt to send the gears to TRE or Shep to check them for you. The cracks in it cant be seen by the naked eye.
