So whats the deal with the EVO Tranny's

So whats the deal. i know that a lot of people have this transmission noise while decelerating. Have we come to an understanding that it is no big deal? or is it? basically, i'm trying to decide if i should start modifying my car or not. if anyone has any remedy's or if they can give me any insight on this, please let me know

Most of us that have the "deceleration noise" have had it since the we drove the car home or within the breakin period.

As far as my case goes, at this point mitsubishi (or at least techline and my dealer) is claiming the noise is "inherant to all evo's" The regional rep is going to look at my car next week since I refused to accept that answer. As far as a few of the other guys cases goes, they have been told the same thing by the dealers they have been to and at least one regional rep.

In short, I'm not aware of addmitting this is a problem, in fact they seem to be calling it normal.

Since there are so few evo's around in most areas it tough to be able to get together with others that have the complaint and compare and contrast the noise to figure out who has a real problem and who is just worrying too much.

thank you for the prompt response. based on your answer, i have one more question for you. is your car stock? if not, have any of the mods affected the noise in your tranny in any way?

Bone Stock, not a single mod. It showed up, the noise that is, in the first week. Please at a minimum... make sure you drive the evo you are looking at BEFORE you finalise all the paperwork. If the dealer gives you any **** about not being able to drive one until you sign everything and the deal is approved... point them over to the transmission failure thread as the reason why.

Also, it has not been proven that the nosie is coming from the tranny, in fact mine was replaced at 700 miles, the tranny that is, and I still have the same noise. It seems to come from the general area of the tranny but again, I tend to think the problem is in another mechanical assembly (maybee clutch or center diff) or perhapse loose/miss fitting part like a heatsheild.

Has anyone actually gotten under their car and checked their heat shields to see if the rattling may be outside the bell housing?

Yup, I have... but there is so much of it that it is damn near impossible to tell without removing it all.... I'm gonna wait before I rip into my shinny new car... until my dealer or the regional rep give me the go ahead.

I wouldn't worry about the tranny too much. AWD tranny's are always more noisy, especially the ones from Mitsu. I have a GSX and it has the same type of noise like the Evo. You only need to worry if it gets real loud and rough. I just got my Evo, and I hear the noise most are referring to, and it's normal. I have less than 200 miles on the car. Actually, the tranny on the Evo seems much more solid, but then again it is brand new. We shall see in a year or so what my final verdict is.

I think many of us are forgetting that this car really is pretty hardcore machinery.. Weird noises, gear whine, tire noise, groans, clunks, all come with the territory.. This car is built solid, has firm motor mounts and transmission mounts, and all sorts of reenforcements to go along with it.. So every shift, bump, clunk, gets transmitted directly to the inside of the car.. (also every engine noise, road noise, bug farting, etc..)

10,350 miles, 2 months.

I think the only noise I get is what sounds like the throw out bearing wobbling or something. Press the clutch in and it goes away. 1st and 2nd gears on acceleration does whine a little, but I was told it's because of straight cut gears. I don't think my car has that deceleration noise everyone is talking about. Noises the car make are nothing really out of the ordinary for a car with so much (AWD, crazy tires).

My brakes suck though. Front rotors are definitely warped to ****.

REZ90, unlike MAD VIII and the others with the deceleration noise, I had the problem of gears grinding going into 5th.
The dealers had the car for 13 days now waiting for the gears to come in from Japan. Once I get it back I will be checking for the deceleration noise.

Damn dude... that blows.... 13 days. I hate to say it but I think you might aught to try and find another dealer to service your car once you get it back... I've gotten good results so far by escalating through mm usa, I know you opened a case with them so I'm supprised they didn't help you get this sorted out quicker.

My issue is still open so I'm not doing any mods, not even a boost gauge until we get this sorted out... It's killin me not touch it but at least I can still drive it.
