my friend and I put the car up on a lift and spun the driveline in 3rd gear like 3K. Underneath, you could isolate the whine I heard in the cabin. the rear diff whined and the trans clattered terribly, could that be my twin plate clutch rattling?

i have an evo 9 and my clutch went out on me. so know i have a stage 2 clutch and lightened fly wheel. but after 2 days of driving it i started getting that loud whining sound. i guess the shop that did my clutch might have put in the wrong oil. but i cant really find out tell i come back from my deployment. 6 mths to go!

couldn't shep have some made if he turned a good set over to someone that makes them?

you would think that someone would have made ring and pinion for the t-case by now, but no such luck. i have a friend that work for a company that make gears, but he said they only make straight cut gears. he's going to check to see if they have to tooling to cut ring and pinion gears.

i have been driving on my whining TC for about 6 months now and for some reason it sounds like the sound is getting better and better lol. I dont launch the car anymore and try not to slam gears so not sure if that has anything to do with it. i figure its shot anyway so ill just drive it until it really fails or starts making a nosie you cant ignore then send it to TRE.

the noise jeff is describing is deafening. think of the straight cut gears touring cars use... thats about how loud this is.

I was under the impression that some whining in the lower gears is normal/acceptable. First and second whined in both my evos and 3-5 do not...I had an 03 and now an 05 with 47,000 miles and ALOT of launches at 6000+ rpm.

almost all the evos whine a small amount... its just the drivetrain noise. your radio, wind noise, a conversation with a passenger, should all be louder then the whine. when the TC is going out, the whine is so loud at highway speeds its all you can hear.

I think this is where breaking in the car properly pays off. Allowing enough miles to let the differentials break in and allow proper backlash to remain in the ring and pinion.
I drove my 03 from Florida to Louisiana, in the rain. Broke it in on the way back to FL. The rain helped cool off the transmission and TC.
I havent had any TC problems with the 05.
39,000 MILES on the stock clutch and lots of drag passes to.
I am installing a Carbonetics twin now, so we shall see how much the TC likes this clutch....
1.4 60fts. Here I come.

I have almost 60k on my 03. Previous owner put the car through its paces... at 20k miles we replaced his stock clutch with an act. When I bought the car at 49k the act was toast. I replaced it with an exedy hd twin disc, fixed the linkage bushing and the front engine mount with a solid mount..... 5th gear grind went away and the almost impossible shift to 2nd also went away. Just happened to notice the whine after the clutch install.
