Tranny? Clutch? Synchros? How to tell...

Well let's start at the beginning to make sure we all take the same route...

OEM Clutch went @ 12k. Replaced with Clutchnet Pressure Plate, 6-Puck sprung disk and OEM resurfaced flywheel.

Tcase failed @15k and was replaced by the dealer (at my cost) and decided I didn't like the Clutchnet so i put in an ACT HDSS w/ flywheel. This all occurred about 9 months ago.

In the last few weeks I’ve noticed notchy and forceful shifts up top in the revs. Today, I experienced lockout in gears 1-4 all throughout the rpms. I brought the engagement all the way up and still the problem persisted. Sometimes i can get it into gear if i double clutch it but that doesn't always solve the problem and i usually have to shut the car and start it in first. Once the car even rolled along WHILE THE CLUTCH WAS DISENGAGED but i think that might have had to do with the engagement being so high.

I’m hoping there is enough info here to determine whether or not this is a transmission problem or a clutch problem. Sorry for the long read.

PS: I have yet to experiance any sort of grinding while attempting to shift. Only the occasionaly grind when shifting to reverse.

PPS: Syncromesh is currently in the tranny.

March 12th, 2:38 AM i found this....

Sounds like syncros are tore up my 4th gear is doing the same thing right now. But i know my 6-puck locks me out at high revvs. Im going with the Tilton twin carbon this week. Which will help with lock out.

What do you plan on doing about your 4th gear syncro?

Since Lucas my mechanic broke it he said he would fix it for free
He used to shifting fast and a single disk just doesn't like it with rev's past 9k so it locked him out and he made it go in
It was the first night at the track this season.

i would check the underhood shift bushings on the end of the cables attaching to the tranny. sometimes the rubber inserts can tear or rip and cause you not to be able to get in gear. with no grinding and more than one gear, i doubt it's the synchros. check those bushings, and tranny fluid too if you haven't already. look for metal in it if it's full still.

Im going to check the fluid tomorrow. I currently have Buschur's underhood bushings and i just recently made sure they were clean and lubricated.

could also be a TOB issue. i think it's a clutch problem, not a tranny problem. as long as the fluid looks good. what fluid did you use by the way?

Just checked the fluid level and there looks to be enough. Car was level and opened the fill and a small amount began to pour out. Also checked the linkage and it seems to be smooth.

....going to take it a step further with a buddy of mine tonight

you may be able to pull the rubber plugs out of the trans and peek in with a light to check out how the TOB is doing.

I had this same problem and it was due to a bad throwout bearing, the shop replaced it and the problem was solved. Not saying that is a full proof solution to your problem but it's something to keep in mind.

I also did this while i was under there. I simultaneously watched the slave cylinder and TOB and it was in fact disengaging the clutch BUT there is a distinct squeaking at the apex on release.
