Factory shop manual availability
Factory shop manual availability
When I 1st got my EVO, I asked the selling dealer about ordering a shop manual. They said they were not listed in the catalog, but would be about $170 when available. I recently ordered some oil filters and other small parts from Tallahassee Mitsu. After receiving them promptly I sent an email asking them about getting a shop manual, they replied "They (shop manuals) were available at one time, but now they are ineligible for order from mitsubishi. They cannot give us any idea if they will be available again". I REALLY would like a shop manual for this car. Anyone know of a source, or anything else about this?
TIA

I have used the tech site frequently (not a substitute for a printed manual IMHO, plus free use ends 6/30). I've also looked at the Helm site and they do not have the manuals available either. If you had read my post carefully, you would have seen that the point was this particular dealer says the manuals WERE available, but for whatever reason this is no longer the case. This is NEW information.

Now how was I supposed to know that? You did not include the fact that you were familiar with the tech site or that you had already checked out the existing thread that I linked in my reply. I did read your original post and understood that your selling dealer said that the manuals were no longer available . I did not take that to mean that all dealers were saying the same thing. I am currently trying to get one from a dealer and have not yet been informed that it is no longer available. Again, that's why I posted the link which includes the publication number and a link to a dealer that has been known to sell it.
I noticed that you are relatively new to the forum and I was trying to provide some assistance with your request while reminding you of the search function. Nothing more...nothing less.
Liandrin11 and pumpdog720-
What's up with the personal attack crap? Search Preacher? If that were true I would not have bothered to take the time to find and post the link to the information I thought would be of assistance to EvoD.
I was really impressed by how informative both of your replies were. I am sure they were all the assistance EvoD was looking for when he posted.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

jfh-Right, in fact you didn't know if I had or had not done a search, so why immediately jump to the negative conclusion that I had not, rather than give me the benefit of the doubt? I understand what you're saying, and I do appreciate that you included the link, but the phrase "If you had done a search" suggests I had not bothered to take the time to follow good form & search before posting. Next time try "did you see this?" or something similar. You'll come across as a lot more helpful & a lot less impatient & judgmental.
BTW to clarify, the dealer who sold me the car (in Ohio) told me the manuals were not in their catalogs of available items, Tallahassee Mitsu (where I was referred on the Mitsu NG as a volume parts dealer & good discount source of Mitsu parts) told me they had once been available but no longer were (which is more troubling then just “they’re not yet available"). Dealers of course are well known for being wrong on just about any aspect of their products so who knows, but it sure would be a drag if the FSM were not available in hard copy. Aftermarket manuals can be useful, but I've always found there's no substitute for a factory manual, even more so on a car as complex as this one.

August is what I was told by a dealer.
Helm will have them at some point but the manuals they have now are just Lancer manuals. I got one from them on CD because it was what they had and it was not for the EVO. They told me it would cover it but they were wrong.

I sent this to Linchburg Mitsubishi on Friday:
My original inquiry was for a CDROM version of the Lancer Evolution Service Manual, P/N:MSCD-206B-2003-TEMP. I would prefer the final version over the temp but either will do. Is it available?
The temp. CDROM is the only thing available right now. The price for this part is around $50.00. We would be happy to get one for you if you like. Please call our parts department at 434-846-0667.

Thanks JHF. Do you know what the content of the temporary cd is (e.g., is it basically the same as the service data on the tech site)? I really find the electronic format cumbersome to use when you're actually working on the car, inevitably you have to refer to something you haven't looked up yet & it's a lot easier with the book open on the bench. Plus the diagrams are pretty unwieldy. Still it would be better than nothing until a hard copy is available & after the free tech site access dries up. Several of us should go in on one of these then burn a bunch of copies

This is thread is interesting to me because when I last stopped by a
dealership to grab parts I asked about the availability of manuals.
I was told was that the CDs used to be available, but
had specifically changed the manuals to "not for sale to the general public". Not sure if this is dealership BS or not, but the parts guy wouldn't order me one.
The dealership I was at was Metro
in Bloomington, MN.

I agree with you about how cumbersome the tech site is to use and that a hard copy is easier when working on the car.
I believe that the temp CD version is the same as the one on the tech site but I'm not positive. Don't know if the CD has the same omissions as the tech site or not, i.e., no turbo disassemble/assembly info. I will PM member who reported getting one and ask him about it.
I see from another thread that you have another strategy until the hard copies are available. Nice idea. I'll be interested to see how well that works. I started copying files as I opened them but discovered immediately that software would be needed to get all of it.
