You would have to have a completly collapsed valve for it not to lift up enough to open the valve all the way. If it was collopsed you would hear this sounds because it would be loud as in a loud ticking. Here is some info for you.

Well I am looking for an answer???? nobody seems to know.. the car has a popping idle, like it is missing, and when you give it gas, and hold it at 2,000 rpm's the car will really sound like it is missing, and no it is not my plugs or my coil packs or wires, it is due to the car have low compression on the number 3 cylinder............ and yes 03-04 evos have low compression in the number 3 cylinder... but that is when they are in spec... mine has a difference of 23%, which is not in spec according to Mitsubishi..... So........ how about some help please....
Wont hurt to check bottom end by dropping pan
Goodluck

^^^^^ kinda of impossible not to drive it sense it is my only car, and I am not missing any coolant, and or coolant is not changing colors, or over heating in the hot az heat... doubt the gasket...
25 psi is going somewhere,
it's a small pinhole but leaking nonetheless (from air pressure out), perhaps not large enough to notice any water. If it isn't the ring seal then what else, valves?
Is this the first time testing? Could be like that from day one - who knows

If your coolant and oil are showing no traces of mixing, and you have no coolant loss, AND your compression doesn't go up when adding oil to the cylinder, this can only mean one thing: bad valve seal. Take the head off the car and sent it to a machine shop for a valve job. Kind of sucks, maybe you can rent or buy another car in the mean time. It pays to have a beater =)

So, before I waste money on a costly job, is there any ways to test for this......

bump for new information.... when you hold the pedal down while the car is not in motion, and hold it at 2,000rpm it will stay and then drop and go back up to 2000, and then drop again...... any ideas..

Bump on this, too. Checked my compression 2 hours ago and the results are 135, 140, 140, 140. Low?? My car has only 2920 miles on it.
