noise: howling just need feedback possible bad turbo
Guys i cant find my old thread but im at a problem,
I just need your feedback.... i have an 04' with mods. Yesterday i heard some loud howling from the turbo. I took all close items off ( intake, pipe to intake, couplers)
I listened, and during boost the howling starts. Its like a misguided or messed up spool up sound. I did check my shaft play it seems to be a little playfull, but im no expert. Is this the normal sound for a bad turbo? also the car only has 27,800 miles and it has cams, intake, uicp, licp, and boost controller, tbe, fp, and clutch. I will be checking TC but the noise comes no where from it. I was suggested that last thread but apparently that thread no longer exist or something.
Im worried because i saw blue smoke when it hits boost. I want to make sure its just the turbo. I am doing compression checks monday. The oil cap shows no signs of a bad head gasket but.... im new to evos.

I would say it is the Transfer case. First on the list. You are at about the mileage they take a dump. During boost is when you put the most engine power to the transfercase to "transfer" the motor power to the wheels. The transfer case is near the turbo. I say you don't need to do a compression test for this one. Are the ones thinking they have a bad turbo, actually finding a bad turbo? I think more likely a TC problem. TC's go bad alot, I don't think the turbos do. (A possibility for a bad turbo? YES) but look at the TC first. my 2c. People who say "Bad turbo" are in denial about a TC problem, and are looking at a cheaper fix for the howling................. I was there once as well. I also thought my spun-bearing-rod-knock was my radiatior fan chewing up an intake pipe!

yeah but how does the tcase make a howl in nuetral at minimal boost. Also i just too k the car for a ride and its not making the noise so often.
I had the intake off and the noise got much louder.
its coming from the turbo not t-case i did think the same thing

It might be your turbo then. If you can make the noise without a "load" on the TC,then I agree with you.............It can't be the TC. Scratch that off the list.
Probably something simple. did you try a boost leak tester? Maybe got a small leak somewhere.
