Naive about your cam gear cover? READ THIS

This weekend I was out and about and all of a sudden I heard what I thought might be the death whine, which everyone associates with the transfercase going out. My friend brought a flashlight over and found the problem. My cam gears had eaten a hole about half a centimeter into my power steering hose.

About a year ago I bought adj cam gears and the stock cover wouldnt fit back over them. I planned to buy another but after a course of events happened my head blew from the adj cam gears not having lock tight and spinning my exhaust cam about 110 degrees, totally frying my head. So while being in debt to a really nice friend who helped me pay for the damager, I haven't been able to afford much. The cover got put on hold but I thought nothing of it. it's been off over a year without any problems.

Well now I'm stuck buying a power steering hose because mine is gushing like crazy... even patched up. Filling the power steering fluid and turning a few times lasts about 300 feet. The hose is 228 dollars, that I don't have.

Learn from my stupidity, and put yours back on if you think nothing bad could happen to you

This really really sucks guys.

custom power steering hose !!

I suggest you pull the hose off and find yourself a hydraulic hose manufacturer. They can usually cut the ends off of your old hose and braze them onto a hose they manufacture for substantially less than what the dealer wants to charge you for a new one. I usually spend about 40 dollars to do this. Look into semi truck parts stores and such they will know where to send you.

Good Luck

Jason

You're actually the first person I've seen to actually have something bad happen to them because they weren't running their cover. Sorry to hear about this.

I also think that with the engline flexing under acceleration would cause the cam egar to come in contact with the P/S hose

This is fairly ironic - I just had my sprocket cover off for an unusual reason last weekend for one day.

I did however ziptie the hose to the A/C tube away from the sprockets to avoid what you experienced - chaffing.

With that cover off like that - PLEASE be careful - we don't want any of our fellow M members reporting missing fingers

dude,
you can cut down the ribs on the back side of the cam gear cover and it will fit just fine. My stocker fits over my AEM gears after grinding down the ribs on the back (gear side) of the cover.

well the only purpose on removing the cam cover is to just see the cam gears, unless they are adjustable, which they are not.. so you get the clear cover... and thnxs for the congrats means alot...

Yeah, dude 15 minutes with a dremel and the stock cover fits.

I'm really surprised to hear this happened though. Was the hose not bolted down with that clamp like it's supposed to be?

thank you.

the cover got taken off for helix cam gears, i took them off after my head blew and vowed never to use adj cam gears again. in doing so i had to borrow a good deal of money from a friend and before getting the cover i'd rather pay my friend back first. the cover had been off a while so i was naive and thought it would be ok. i have the stock ones in as you can see but i gave the cover to a friend since i wasn't using it. he moved back home to lubbock so it's not like i could ask him for it back, nor would i. i want to get the cf one that gruppe-s has but i was waiting on that to pay my friend first. i guess its going to have to take a little priority now, but not before paying for this retardedly expensive hose i wasn't planning on having to buy
