HKS 280's to GSC S1's for Evogreen
HKS 280's to GSC S1's for Evogreen
Well guys, i'm in a crossroads right now. All the mods for my Evogreen are in my sig, but i've been contemplating to switch my cams out for the S1's. The turbo feels like it takes a little longer to spool up w/the 280's and thats what i was expecting, but not this bad. My 2nd gear pulls feel totally weak, but my 3rd gear pulls feel just fine. This was all done to attempt to log w/evoscan but the laptop didn't have all the updates for it to run dammit. Haha, anyways so what do you guys think? Is it worth it to swap out the cams? I've gotta buyer already setup for the 280's if i decide to take them out and it covers the price for the S1'S. But on another note, would S2's be overkill w/the Green? I've been reading S1's are the perfect cam for this particular turbo. Going to run the track w/my current setup hopefully this week to see where i'm at.
If you want to improve spoolup you might wanna try adjusting your cam gears to +1i/-1e, or the alternate +2i/0e setting. Also, add some more preload to your WG. About 17# is good.
Currently, the S1's seem to be the preferred mild cam grind, and if I was in the market for a new set of cams for my Green-equipped car, that's probably what I would get.
But, since you already have HKS 280's installed, then you might as well tinker with them a bit to see if you can get it to spool any better, before going through the expense and hassle of R&R.
I have my HKS 280/272 equipped, EvoGreen-fitted RS spooling tolerably well. It isn't quite the same as the old TME, but it is close. I can get it to hit 18.5# by 3600 RPM when I roll it on from 2500RPM. This is with a stock, plastic DV to boot and the cams set at +1/-1. So, you may wanna play around with your setup first.
I think that with the right camgear settings you can get your existing cams to work pretty well with the Green. Don't forget that you should have more topend power with the 280's.

^^ all valid points, definite tune adjustment to get that bad boy moving...2nd gear should pull and feel just as good as 3rd...I'm leaning more towards getting your tune tweaked. Leaner spool up or more timing like stated above, I think Jestr knows about that =)...he should be able to adjust your map.

Boss: I just mentioned this as a point of reference. FYI, I rolled it on in 4th on level ground @ 2500 ft. above sealevel. I am not out to claim any record. Its just an incidental observation I made after installing a new DV and while trying to further adjust WG preload on my new Green.
I think there is room for improvement. My car is pig rich as I installed bigger injectors and although the ECU is scaled it is running way rich because I am awaiting an O2 sensor/cable replacement. So, it isn´t tuned at all. Just way rich.
Some of the other guys mentioned that pulling fuel at low RPM´s will also improve spool. This and pulling timing at low RPM´s to create more exhaust heat/energy should also help spoolup.
It´s just my opinion that maybe the O.P. should tinker with his present setup and exhaust all the usual tricks before giving up on his HKS 280´s, rather than just spending more cash and wasting a bunch of time switching cams.
Furthermore, I don´t think that anyone has yet done any back-to-back dyno tests with the EvoGreen(maybe I´m wrong) comparing the HKS 280´s vs. the GSC S1´s. Given a set of camgears the 280´s can probably be made to spool almost as well as the S1´s, and the topend should ultimately be better.

In spite of the fact that I´ve been using HKS 280´s for a couple years; if I had to purchase cams today, I would probably get the GSC S1´s or a GSC 272/264 combo. It´s just that for me it´s not worth it to spend more money on a new set of cams at this point in time( I´m saving up my allowance for an Aquamist kit). So, at least for the immediate future, I am destined to tinker with my current setup.
I really like the specs on the S1´s and the fact that they seem to be designed with the stock unported head, quick spool and midrange torque in mind. I like the shorter duration and increased exhaust lift. It seems like a good option for stock to medium sized turbo Evos.

We have experienced problems with Compcams and Helix quality control.

maybe your a torque junky & didnt realize it?
i had hks 272I/264E & 280/280, see my link below showing the dyno compare. What the dyno chart doesnt reveal, is the transient response experience on the street, everyday!
i too am a torque junky too. although the 280's accelerated the car a hell of a lot faster from 60-80 & 40-90, i still prefered the 272i/264e combo.
i guess that is the difference between poeple who prefer a 35r over a 30r type turbo.
sell the 280's & get the gsc s1's when they're available.
