Shepard Trans plain and simple FTW.
Not to mention that "factory quality" in this case is pretty **** poor, when you consider how easily and how regularly poeple are folding the teeth over on these ****boxes. The DSM Tcases will take 10 years of hard abuse, right up until you snap the whole shaft. The gears have gotten weaker from the factory, and I don't think you could do much worse. Just thinking out loud. YMMV.
Shepherd hasn't built hundreds if not thousands of DSM transmissions that hold up to very high power levels all day long by using parts that are lower quality than factory.

Just spoke to John, the rumor is true on the ring and pinions. However, he says these won't be available to the public until atleast a couple of months. They are still testing them out and should be ready at a later date.
It might be worth it to hold off on doing it if the cost savings is substantial... damn there i go thinking like an accountant again
