Gear shifting problem...Please help me diagnose

Lately, the shifter just won't stay in gears. Until now, it only happened during the 1st. Now, the problem even occurs for the 5th. To describe the problem, I would place the gear, then it would just pop out to the neutral on its own. I was suspecting the synchros as the cause of these problems, but my semi-mechanic friend thinks that it's a linkage problem after seeing the car today.

One more thing is that I can hear what sounds like a loosened bolt or washer when I shift the gears while the engine is off... I am gonna take the shifter console off now and try to see what's going on. Meanwhile, what do you guys think the problem is? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

i had this problem and got it fixed by the dealer recently. My first gear was popping out into neutral on its own when i got on it (about 4500rpm) and it ended up being the 1st gear sleeve as being the culprit. They originally changed out the shift cables, but it turned out the be an internal transmission problem.

As for why its happening slowly to the other gears, i am not sure... but definately take it to the dealer ASAP and don't let them give you the run around. It took months and finally i had to wait 2 1/2 weeks to get my car back because they didn't know what it was and were basically using trial and error. hope this helps

Evolved 83,

My problem is slightly different from yours in that it would stay in gears once the gear engages. In my case, it only happens when I shift initially. The first gear is the most apparent... Clutch seems to hold the power just fine and there is also no grinding in any gears. Anyways, I am gonna bring the car to the dealership today and see what happens there.
