Cool 363whp EVO VIII/New Cams

I just got off the dyno testing some new cams that will be available for the EVO VIII very soon. This morning I ran the HKS 272/272 cams and swapped them out for the new one's and had a consistant 8-10whp gain. No significant spool up or low-end power loss at all. The only downfall is that the idle is worse than the 272's, these things sound downright mean! I made a few pulls back to back and made about 360-363whp on each run. I'll keep everyone updated on the availability of them. Tomorrow I'm testing our new bolt-on intercooler core upgrade and our new tubular O2 housing/downpipe.

AMS do you need to run bigger injectors and fuel pump for those gains?

Are these "new cams" regrinds on the factory cams, or just new cams from a company other than HKS?

Can you give us any more details on these?

Also, you mention that the idle is worse than than the 272's. I've heard that the idle on the 272's is not that bad at all to begin with. So how bad is the idle on the new cams?

A few answers to questions on this post:

Mods to the car:

K&N cone filter
AMS MAS pipe
AMS downpipe (with test pipe) & AMS cat-back exhaust
Manual boost controller
Custom ground cams
Apexi S-AFC II
Lightweight Battery (10.5lbs vs 35lb stock)
and there is a stock EVO VIII turbo on there now. I ran both turbo's on the dyno (EVO V and the EVO VIII that is on there now) and there was no significant difference in spool up or power.
Total cost of these mods is about $2400.00 plus installation and tuning. We will be upgrading the fuel system very shortly because we are starting to push it pretty hard.

Cam questions:
These are custom ground for us and I'll have more info shortly. They idle slightly worse than 272's. These are not re-grinds, these are brand new blanks. I'm having these made in quantity so I will be distributing them to other vendors.

Thanks,
Martin

264/264

272/272

what is each combo good for?.. i am just looking at numbers, but this car is my dailydriver so i am trying to keep the best matchup for the use of my car.

Im' wondering with such gains in power over the HKS cams. I would think you are adding more lift to the cams as from what I know th duration can't be that high as that would inhibit overlap. Boost doesn't like too much overlap.

I'm wondering how you are dialing in the cams for the setups. Are you using a wide or low LSA? I guess the best info is whats the lift compared to stock and HKS'!

Sounds like a great alternative to the HKS 272's so far.

This morning I ran the HKS 272/272 cams and swapped them out for the new one's and had a consistant 8-10whp gain
Were you using the stock gears for both sets of cams?

Actually you can use more overlap as long as your exh. backpressure is low (large exh. side on the turbo). In our case these cams are about as radical as you'd want to go with a stock turbo. The cams are being worked on as we speak and will be manufactured on a CNC cam grinding machine so there is no master cam (like a Landis machine) and no grind inconsistancies. I will release more info on these cams as we progress.
