Another whine thread???
Yes. I was searching about tranny/TC/Diff fluids when I stumbled across a few posts about whining sounds. It got me interested. I have slight whining in first and second gear but I can't really hear it past 3rd because of tire noise, wind noise, etc. (my windows are down 90% of the time). I assumed my whining was normal. Almost sounds like spur gears.
As far as my reading went, the T/C death whine can be noticably heard on the highway in 5th gear, accel and decel. I don't notice that. I'll see if I notice anything tomorrow on the way to work, but if I hadn't noticed it yet, I doubt I will tomorrow. I assume if I have to TRY an listen, then my TC is not the problem. As I said, I only notice any whining in first and second. It kind of sounds like a WRC car... Do EVO's have spur gears?
I wanted to change the fluids in the first place due to buying the car with 60k on it. I'm not sure what mainteance the previous owne has done, but I just wanted to do those fluids just for peace of mind. I'm capable on doing all this stuff at work, for I am a Honda technician with access to lifts and such, but I'm new to EVO's. Since I have to go to the dealer anyway to get the OEM tranny fluid and Diaqueen TC and diff fluid, I was going to have them check the whine sound, and maybe just do the fluids for me...
Sorry for such a long post. Any opinions on my whine?
Similar to this, but not NEARLY as bad, hahahahaha!!! (only in first and second in my case)

Well, I see people are probably sick of answer to threads like these, haha. But I dorve the car today, and I finally was able to notice the differance in the TC whine ad tranny whine. I assume very slight sound is normal. The tranny whines, and I read on here somehwere that the EVO does use stright cut gears, not helical in the tranny... true?
I did notice a TC whine but only in first gear and I have to have my stereo off in order to hear it. Today is the first time I noticed because I had to concentrate to hear it. So I'm assume if I had to try and hear it, it's ok. I want to check with the dealer I bought the car from to see if there are any mantinance records to see if the 60k service was done and all fluids are fresh. I know the engine oil was fresh but I haven't gotten a chance to crawl under and check the tranny, TC or rear diff.
Still open for opinions
But I'm pretty confident that my drivetrain is not going to blow up anytime soon like mnay of the horror stories I was reading =0

mine started on the highway in 5th...just 'bbwwwwooooooooohhhhhhhhn"...nothing in the lower, then a few days later...2nd gear i could hear it just cruising...now all the gears are blessed with the sound.
I should have used the right TC fluid instead of royal purple...all I could get my hands on at the time...

If you have the death whine it will get louder the faster you go. It is speed dependent, not gear dependent. I read before that 1st and 2nd gear were straight cut. I would call TRE or Shep to find out for sure though.

Yeah first and second really sound like stright cuts. Alright, well I needed to make my own post, just for peace of mind, and I appriciate the comments
There is a slight TC whine, but I can't hear it after first gear. Tire noise, engine noise and wind drown it out after 20mph.
I just need to look up the service recods to see if the 60k was done with the trans/TC and diff. fluids. Thanks
