Substitute for Mitsubishi's DiaQueen Gear Oil

Before anybody jumps on my case... I have searched, and I have read all the old threads about engine oil, and transmission oil.

This thread is specifically for finding a replacement to Mitsubishi's DiaQueen SAE 90W, GL-5 Hypoid gear oil that goes into the front and rear differentials. So far most professionals agree to use the OEM fluid. I think its too expensive to source locally, and over the internet you have to pay for additional HAZMAT fees. There must be an alternative.

Keep in mind that the replacement oil MUST be GL-5 rated (extreme performance for Hypoid gears where sliding and rolling contacts operate under very high loadings), AND be single grade SAE 90W (Multi-grades like 80W-90 is not acceptable).

To start this off, I found a gear oil for Marine applications under the Starbrite label. It can be purchased in 32oz bottles (http://www.starbrite.com/sproductdetail.cfm?ID=829), or in a gallon container (http://www.starbrite.com/sproductdetail.cfm?ID=827) at West marine.

Has any one used this product, or have any success with other products? Your opinions are welcomed.

Not many people are brave enough to experiment with their two thousand dollar transfer cases =) If there is a suitable alternative to the OEM fluid, you can bet I'd be willing to make the switch. To my knowledge there is no known alternative...

Check the Mobil one GL5 gear lubricant! I saw some bottels in autozone for about $7.00 Qt. Good luck!

there is another alternative to the mitsu diaqueen.

Ford sells a straight 90 weight hypod gear oil that is exactly the same as the diaqueen just alot cheaper. I have a gallon left in the garage.

Been using that or Redline HEAVY WEIGHT shock proof (pink stuff) in my TC for a long time with outstanding results. Very little if any metal shavings on the drain plug when I change the fluids, which in my case is about 4 times a year.

Do you have the Ford part # for that fluid? If I go to a Ford dealership, how will they know what I'm talking about? Which do you recommend, the Redline heavyweight shock proof, or the ford hypoid oil?

Three fluids I know fro a fact work:

1. Amsoil- I use this and it is specifically made for the hypoidal gears of our case.

2. Moroso - straight 90w oil

3. Mobil 1 75-90w

It's only $33 for a gallon from Mitsubishiparts.net, which lasts you a while. Is that expensive?

There's really no reason not to use it after hearing all of the bad things about not using it. Like Warrtalon said, it's really not expensive when compared to a transfer case or rear LSD.

Umm so buy it over the internet

Warrtalon just posted its $33 from Mitsubishipartsnet! It will last you a while too, so divide that up by 4-6 changes and its DOLLARS we are talking about here. To complain about the price of a $33-68 item seems a bit crazy considering you are driving a $30k+ car and the drivetrain parts are very expensive.

Assuming you drive normal mileage, that jug of Diaqueen will last you well over a year. I spent $60 at the bar Saturday night. Just seems crazy to me..

Its not expensive, but its a pain in the *** to have to wait to receive it. It would be nice to use a fluid that is obtainable locally. Who knows, maybe some of these after market fluids offer better protection?

Yeah, not sure why people buy it anywhere other than Mitsubishiparts.net. I'm not familiar with any hazmat charge either. I get both my Super DiaQueen and DiaQueen from Mitsubishiparts.net every time...

Oh, there's also a guy on here by the name of Spinz4, I think, who can get us kickass deals on any Mitsu OEM parts/fluids, so check with him.

If you just buy it in advance and keep it stored, then you have it when you need it. If something is as good or better and locally available, yeah, that's convenient. I'm just wondering why he thinks $33 from Mitsubishiparts.net is worth going on a safari hunt for a replacement fluid.
