Found the problem, what now?

Here's the scoop. I have a 2004 Evo 8 with 41k miles. When shifting into 5th under power I get a grind. I have searched and found that there was a TSB for this problem and it's the synchro.

I heard on Click and Clack and also on a website that rebuilds Evo transmissions that replacing just one piece of your transmission very often leads to a breakage soon after and replacing the entire transmission is recommended.

Is this true? Should I go get it fixed under warranty or just go easy on 4th to 5th shifts?

EDIT: Here is the website where I read this:http://www.jackstransmissions.com/fa...35c8319627c42b
Q: I have a small problem with my transmission (Grinds going into 2nd or similar). Can you just fix the problem without rebuilding the transmission?

A. We have experimented with doing that for people in the past, and it has never gone well. When you just replace a single synchro, something else almost always fails within a short time. Therefore, we can not fix problems like this without doing a complete rebuild.

Get 3 quarts of BG Synchroshift II and dump it in.

I have the same problem with my 06 IX RS i just learned that you dont even have to take the tranny out to change the 5th gear syncro. you just take the end cover off and theres very little to take apart after that to change them.

So far I have cured 3 different Evo's of the 5th gear grind by switching to a better fluid. OEM 5 speed fluid sucks.

You heard right. The 6 speed MR fluid works GREAT in the 5 speed transmission. This is what many are doing when they road race their 5 speeds and this is what TRE personally recommended to me.

I had the 5th gear grind at around 30k miles. I put in GM Synchromesh fluid and it immedately went away. Around 35k, it came back very slightly. Changed the fluid again at 35k... hasnt come back since... Im at 73,000 miles now!

Same with me, I exclusively use GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh because its so cheap and available (you can buy it at Autozone). Works great! Although for AutoX I prefer to use BG II since its synthetic and can withstand sustained high temperature abuse.

Thats exactly why I use it too. I have heard it breaks down quicker than fluids like the BG, however, BG is much more expensive. Also, I dont do any auto-x or road racing, or hell even long trips so the GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh works great for me.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll definitely look into getting some of that fluid. Who knows if it's ever been changed since I bought the car at 31k miles.

You might try adjusting clutch pedal free play as well.
