2nd Exedy triple carbon=crapola

So, I don't know if anybody remembers the thread I made last year regarding the problems I had with my first Exedy Triple carbon. I had it in the car for less than 7,000 miles and if I remember correctly I only had like 20 launches on the clutch at the track.

Fast forward to now and the second Exedy triple carbon has less than 4,000 miles on it with about 30 track launches and it slips on low boost and pump gas(500whp).

Doug at Topspeed tuned the car @ 23-24 psi on pump gas making 500whp, but when Doug turned the boost up to around 31 it started slipping bad. The car made right at 600whp @ 31 psi, but with it slipping we couldn't turn the boost up to 40 psi where I want to.

I am going to try the ACT extreme 6 puck and see how it does. Much cheaper if it goes out.

Has anybody had any issues with the ACT? Which clutch would you recommend for around 700whp?

I plan on spraying a 150 direct port shot on top of that also so it needs to hold that too.

Tilton does not make a triple carbon, so I'd be very interested in learning what "good things" you've heard about one

^^ They make any kind of clutch you want up to 4 plates thick...probably more if you need it...maybe not for the Evo but it's possible to hear good things about Tilton triple-plate clutches in other applications...

I feel your pain i had my exedy triple carbon go out in less 5k miles. What i was told from exedy is that if you ever daily drive the carbon you have to constantly slip it or else it wear out quickly, even if you want to do a highway pull even if only cruising for a few minutes you have to slip it to heat it up before every hard pull or else it will just slip and wear out the discs.

^^ Yeah Exedy support (some a$$hole in Australia or something) got all pissy with me when I wanted them to warranty my triple-puck single-plate in my eclipse because it went out with less than 3,000 miles on it. They said it was either an installation error or abuse (abusing the triple-puck racing clutch???)...and it was still in the car nobody had even looked at it yet...it came out blue from heat and the pucks were down to the backing plate. Dunno what caused what (did it overheat and disentigrate the pucks, or did the pucks wear out and let it slip enough to make enough heat to turn it blue?) But it didn't even hold up to a few drag launches and some street driving. After my first and last experience with Exedy products I stayed away. I hear mixed results from all their products...either really really good or really really bad...so it's really a crap shoot. I'm not willing to shoot craps in vegas with thousands of dollars, so why would I do it with a clutch?

Any multi plate clutch is going to ware out quicker then normal. This is where the term ( You got to pay to play ) comes in. Anyone that has had that clutch will tell you after a few passes its time to check to see if it need to be rebuilt. Same with tilton, carbonectics so on. Once you get up to pass a single plate clutch setup. Changing plate disks are going to turn into reg. maintenance.

The ACT's hold no doubt, I love ACT but as with a single plate on the newer evo's, they lock out at high rpms. over 8000 rpm on drag runs.
I had a 3200 lb 6 puck on mine and it NEVER EVER slipped once on my 750 plus WHP Evo 6....

But for shifting purposes, I am now back on a triple carbon exedy, only diff is the car is only a drag car...not daily driven...wish me luck!

Im even shocked it lasted you that long. I know guys that change disks every 10 passes or 250 miles whatever comes first. There is a guy on here that changes his carbonectics every 4 times he takes his car out. But he has well over 1000whp. And the best part about it is that he doesnt even drag race he just drives it on the street.

the exedy carbon clutches suck, plain and simple. The only people they are good for are the people that get them for free and i hear they change the discs ALL THE TIME
