Do K&N drop-in filters cause the EVO to run lean??

the power increase is brought on from the lean condition of the car. Hook up a wideband and go back on the road! Youll most likely see 12.5:-13:1

Don't have a wide band. Of course it runs leaner; better gas mileage. Has anyone recorded AF's with just the Ralliart Filter and stock everything else? I thought Shiv's lean AF's were the result of tinkering with the AF map with the K&N and/or Ralliart and they (the filters) created an additional variable that made tuning difficult.

I'll remain skepital that the AF's get that lean with just the filter until someone shows me data from a completely stock EVO.

When my evo FIRST rolled onto the dyno, shiv was bedazzled that my AF was so damn high. He quickly looked at my air filter and realized I had the ralliart drop in. He showed me my MAS readings, they were all over the place and the ecu, in its current form, had a difficult time adding fuel to compensate for the filter due to the whacked out air flow.

Shiv told me my AF was as high as 13:1 at some points prior to tuning.

Take that as you will.

I have a wide band O2 (FJO) permanently mounted in my car and and I have a K&N drop in filter. I could feel an improvement (especially in the top end) with the K&N, and my dyno testing showed a very solid 4 WHP gain with this filter. As far as A/F ratios, 5K and above I see 10.0 (same as stock).

Thats good to hear! Maybe its just the RalliArt foam panel filters that cause this

The Ralliart added 5 HP on both runs as compared to the stock filter. Also, we both noticed that the car pulled stronger at higher RPM and the turbo spooled a little quicker. I was very pleased. We'll try a K&N filter next.

Great Info. I'll be interested to see your results for the K&N.

where in the rpm range did you see the 12-13 a/f ratios?
if it was in the lower rpm range below 5000rpm, i believe with the stock filter the a/f ratios are pretty similar below 5000rpms. I could be wrong could you clarify on this please. thanks.

with the stock O2 sensor ( I know it's not accurate but it gives you an idea of what's going on ) below 5000rpm you have 12-13 a/f ratios with the stock filter, then it goes to 11's and finally 10's right around redline.

very good question. I am assuming ABOVE 5000rpm, but we will have to confirm with Shiv. Maybe he can chime in??

Shivy~~!~~!~

what about leaving the stock filter and box and just changing to an intake pipe like the rmr or cusco one...that would smooth out the flow wouldn't it?

I think AMS or some other tuner did a dyno of that and they said he LOST 4WHP by just doing the intake pipe. However after SAFC tuning, they gained that 4WHP back..

DAMNIT I wish I could find that site... Im sure it was AMS or Pruven.....

I'm guessing an intake pipe like the RMR or Cusco would most likely be better then the stock one. If anything for the heat reduction at least. Has anyone else installed one of these intake pipes, as I was considering getting the Cusco one.

How do you figure the heat reduction? The pipes are usually just painted and not jethot coated. Rubber is more insulative then mild steel or aluminum.

Anyone know if Samco or similar company will have a rubber intake hose to replace the stock ridged one? Pipes are smooth, but will heat soak more than rubber.
