Drivetrain Questions

Little background first:

I've been running a Mazda GTX rally car for the past few years in a local hillclimb series, and am now looking to build a new car. I'd settled on trying to find a salvaged IX, but haven't found the right donor car yet.

A couple of friends of mine are kicking around the idea of making a tube frame open wheel car. We plan to put the engine in the back, and the driver in the front for better weight distribution. I'm trying to do some research to figure out the best drivetrain for the project - we're considering both the STi and Evo as suitable donors b/c of the electronic center diffs.

Can anyone tell me the weight of the engine & 5-speed transmission w/ACD?

How far does the front of the engine hang out past the front axles?

Thanks,

Dave

Is this a better question for the Evo General forums or has nobody ever put these on the scales?

Any shops have this stuff out of a car at the moment?

you're not thinking about putting an evo or sti drivetrain in a car backwards are you?

In general terms yes, that's what we're trying to do, but in practice its going to be a bit more complicated than just building the car reversed on the drivetrain. We've seen it done on some other applications locally, and it takes a bit of engineering know-how that I don't have personally. I'm just trying to do my homework on dimensions so when the time comes to select between the STi & Evo, we'll have everything needed to make an informed decision.

Personally, I'm hoping to select the Evo stuff as its much easier to crazy power from the engine, but for a project like this, the packaging is probably going to dictate which drivetrain gets selected.
