Help! Syncro Break-in?
Help! Syncro Break-in?
I'll keep it quick
Had 5th gear grind and sometimes reverse
Pulled tranny, used a gear puller to pull gears, had a tranny shop press new gears with new syncros for 5th and reverse, new 5th/reverse sleeve and new syncro springs, and everything looked correct. Put everything back together, and I cannot get into 5th or reverse (even tried when tranny was out of the car. The sleeve seems to be getting hung up trying to get over the syncro spring ring.
I thought maybe it would take a little breakin to get in since I remember a thread where someone got their transmission back from TRE or Shep and they had to drive a bit till they could get into reverse and 5th (get the fluid circulated).
I drove about 15 miles but it didn't seem to help. I didn't really try forcing it hard cause I don't want the shift cable to break or fork to bend
-I'm going to check the clutch pedal but I didn't change anything there so it shouldn't be the problem and I can't even shift in when the car is off
-Is there some break in procedure to seat the syncro springs? I looked at the old set and it seems pretty hard to get the collar past the springs, kinda like a spring clip. Should I tap the shift fork with a rubber mallet while holding it against 5th or reverse to seat it the 1st time?
Tranny is currently filled with MT90/MTL 2:1 mix. stock clutch
