What CAM for a 2.3L with a 50Trim? Experts weigh in

Yes.. I searched

I'm looking for some technical points here to help with the mid and top range. The motor is a 2.3L with a VIP 50trim. I have no plans of changing to a BB turbo at this time. The car is dropping off HP after 6K and you can feel the delay in the upper 6's. The motor has GSC 272s, no cam gears.
The boost is very modest at 22.

I'd like to keep the low end fairly stable and have a good idle.

Would cam gears be the best choice with the GSCs - or a new set of cams? Trying to cap this mod at $500.

... here is the car

The BR272 cams would definately help your top end...and the loop is not that bad also...what you need is beefier cams than what you got right now....JUNs are great also but loopier according to some people.

Yes a set of cam gears that are degreed in can make a good bit of difference. I tun +2 on intake and -1 on the exhaust. It was worth about 25awhp and extended my power band another 250rpms

well i would say the buschur 272 custom grind cams. JUN's are like $1000.

The GSC S1s seem to have made inroads and may be ideal. Since you have a stroker you may even go to S2s with success. I don't know much about the Buschur 272s other than their meant to be paired with GT35R sized turbos. The fact that you have a stroker and are moving more air may offset this. So, S2s or BF272s. As always, contacting the respective shop for advice is a good idea.

In any event, get rid of those GSC 272s. I think they're dated and nothing special.

I originally thought the restriction could be the 50trim - but I'm now more inclined to think its the outdated cams. And, at 22psi, the T3/T04E isnt beyond its range. The IC is a BR-Race.

The restriction is in the valves and timing. I suppose the gears would be the cheapest option. 25whp would be more than ideal.

But the cam choice seems to be newer S series or BR272s.

I am going to get my VIP 50 trim along with a 2.3 tuned tomorrow.

I have weak sauce for cams though 264/272. So well see what happens...

How in comparison is that dynomight to a dynojet?

the restriction is the 50trim. cams will give you a little bit more power up top but will not change the fall off of the power after 6k.

Gears would be a minimal change in power. A custom set of cams with stock gears again will make a small change in your power drop off.

Look no further than your turbo for a larger power band.

Have you done anything with the TB/intake manifold yet? Port those out before you put in bigger cams!

If you do go with some beefier stix, I would say go with the buschur BF272's.

The TB and mani are stock, but I think what we are seeing in the graph is a pretty big flow restriction.

I thought it could be the 50trim, but at 22psi, its not overstressed. And is within its range.

No other cams post the best mid/upper numbers besides the BR and GSC S series for the 8s?

I would get cam gears and dyno tuned.. then bigger TB and 22,5 lbs that would get you 400whp flat to 6700-800 rpm aprox.
