ix turbo install w/ out tune

Ive searched on here quite a bit trying to find out if it's a bad idea to cruise around with a ix turbo on my VIII until i get a retune for it. Ive got a custom tune for the stock 9.8 turbo, but im getting ready to swap it out with the ix turbo that i just bought. I guess as long as i stay out of boost i will be fine? Thanks guys.

Yes stay out of boost until the car is completely tuned.

The IX turbo isn't any bigger than the VIII turbo/compressor wheels. Just bigger housings. It's impossible for the car to run lean over the VIII turbo! This IX turbo hype like it's actually a valid upgrade is annoying..

your ECU will do its best to do what it can to keep you correct but, to get the most gains and to be safe get a tune!

ANY time you change air/fuel OR turbos you should get a tune.

Ive seen as much as 22whp and as low as 13 whp on JUST a IX swap so, really it is a great upgrade But, my opinion I would just green it

22whp isn't enough power to warrant damage being done to the engine if he punches it with that turbo. It's definitely not worth the money IMO. I'm getting IX #s without a IX turbo which proves it's not such a big performance gain from the VIIIs like a true upgraded turbo would give.

Just my 2 cents..

Guys, i know its an upgrade. I know its not a huge upgrade, but it is a proven upgrade. I just needed to know if whether to stay outta boost until i get it retuned, which i know it will need. Sorry BOOSTEZ but you are completely wrong, the ix turbo yeilds higher hp than the viii. Common sense becasue it flows more due to the bigger compressor housing and hotside, even though the wheel is the same.

I never said it didn't yield higher whp. I said it's not enough of an airflow difference to worry about blowing your engine if you punched it right after changing it from the VIII turbo. 22whp is a difference, but it's not a lot. I can get that with tubular headers and a midpipe. But those aren't going to blow my engine if I went WOT.

If, for example, you put on a 35r or green turbo, THEN I'd tell you to lay off the throttle because it's pushing enough airflow at a certain psi to cause the motor to go lean and cause detonation. Get what I'm saying??
