After I stopped I heard a unique wierd noise, Please help.

I heard a VERY wierd noise tonight. I was driving very slow almost at a stop when I heard a crackling sound. Coming from the are of my shifter. Then after I stopped, I shook the car front to rear and it made the same clicking/crackling sound. It did it for about 5 to 6 rocks then went away. And I drove it home, (about 6 miles) and it wont do it again.

I was curious if it could possibly be the T-case. And if it is, What happens when they fail?

Do the tires lock up? Or does it just coast to a stop?

Any help/opinions are and is appreciated. Thanks.
