Clicking noise from the engine?

I've tried searching, but I don't know exactly what to call this. When ever I start my car from a cold start, there is a "Click click click" noise that comes from the engine. When I was standing by the front passenger wheel, I could hear it very clearly, and now Im even able to hear it from inside the car. It seems that it ONLY happens when the engine is cold, before it gets a chance to warm up. After 5-10 minutes of driving, the engine warms up and the sound goes away. It is a LOT worse when winter roles around, when its a LOT colder. Also, the clicks fluctuates with the RPM of the engine. If I hit the gas a little, the clicking noise starts to click faster. Once the engine is completely warm, the sound is gone. Its getting to a point to where everyone can easly notice it inside, and outside the car. What could be the reason for this clicking sound?

sounds like your lifters. have you bled them recently or installed new cams? sounds like that may be the problem.

im sure there's a write-up/how-to...you don't necessarily have to bleed the lifters but it was just a thought as what you had described sounded like the lifters. when worst comes to worst, you have a bad lifter(s) ....i would bleed them just to make sure. if the problem/sound persists, then i would suggest you have your Evo checked by a professional....

if it is the lifters, then i wouldn't understand why it would be so because you do drive an '06 ....still fairly new in my perspective but i guess just to be safe, have them bled

Do you recently do an oil change? If so thats most likely it. I changed my oil one time before from Mobil 1 to Royal Purple. I had a lifter tick for sometime afterwards. I changed oil back to Mobil 1,back to normal.

I had the same problem, turned out that the crank drive pulley had broke a bolt off in the sprocket and was rubbing my timing cover.

I can't find the picture but there is a T-shirt with the three diamonds on it and underneath them it says " The ticking...Oh, that's normal" if that gives you any clue on how common this is.

Most likely your lifters. Depending on how involved you want to get there are a few ways to try and fix them. Changing your oil, taking out your cams( good excuse to upgrade) and cleaning and bleeding them, or taking out the cams and replacing them with some of the non ticking aftermarket replacements. I don't know if the aftermarket ones actually work or not.

is the clicking coming from the motor or from an accessory? (water pump ,ac compressor) my 9 clicks also, but i think its the bearings in the water pump. I am going to test this week. good luck

read this, if it is the lifter that i supposed it is because i had it too, then you need the "italian tune up" did it once and it worked, do it at your own risk.
