Engine Startup Grind???

I tried searching but I can't find anyone reporting the same issue. Every once in a while, when I start the evo, I get this grind sound from the motor. It happens randomly. When it occurs, the motor seems to hesitate/struggle to start. Any ideas? I have 272's, Xede, and Walboro amongst other things. All have been on the car for 10-15k miles. It seemed to start after the cam install, but its possibly just my imagination about that. The car battery is about 4 years old, the timing is set at -2,-2 (yes they are adjustable gears), the oil level is normal as well as the pressure. I can't figure it out. Clutch maybe? Any help appreciated.

mine has done that random grind for the last 8 thousand miles. It began after I had some big cams put in. I have smaller cams now and the grind is less frequent.
I also lowered timing in the start area.

don't know if the actual cams had any effect or if it was a coincidence.

but i would suggest retarding your timing a little if it was raised to smooth out your idle.

thanks. mine seemed to appear after putting in the 272s. its not really frequent. usually just when i haven't started the car for a while. never used to be a huge concern, but now i store it for the winter so it worries me more. i also have noticed that if it starts to do it and i give it a little bit of gas, it'll catch easier. and when i used to use the remote start, from time to time, the starter would just keep going after the car was started. it must be the starter now that i think more about it. that and the timing. i am in the process of rebuilding the car since i dont' drive it daily anymore and need to do a timing belt. after that is done i'll screw with the timing in the map. thanks again for the replies.
